Replacement for Mag pump

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a pump to replace my mag 7. I've heard that they tend to run hot and believe that this is where much my of heat is coming from so I'm looking to find something else. It is currently only used as a return with a little bit t'd off for the refugium.

Any suggestions?

what size system do you have? I have ran a mag 12 on a 90 gallon display with a 20 long sump for years and didn't have heat issues related to the return pump. I recently upgraded to a 150 display with 40 gallon sump and still no heat issues from the pump.
I'm not an authority on pumps but my experience shows me a pump that is undersized will over heat and that heat will be transmitted into the water column. It may be you need to upsize your pump rather than replace a pump that has a history of being extremely dependable and has been the staple for years in this hobby

Well the best are Sicci, Tunze, ehiem but as others have said you get what you pay for so be ready to pay for em.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm currently running at 60 display with custom sump. I was leaning towards the ehiems.

reef octo water blasters are nice too but you cant beat the eheim.

your running a 60 with custom sump with a 7, try uping to a 9.5 you will find heat will be reduced temendously

Do you have glass tops? Or a canopy?

I run a 12(?) or what ever thanh used to have on his 250, On my 93. And have to use a heater.

Ya I've got a 24, 18, & 14 in my sump with no heat issues.

Ok, so I have an open top, 36 inch 4 bulb db t5 fixture, 36 led blue strip (only on for a few hours in the morning and night), mag 7 return, reef octopus 150 skimmer, and maxi jet 1200 for reactor.

I'm guessing I would have less heat if I lowered the AC in my place. I'm also wondering about evaporation rate which seems pretty high.

I had a 75 with a 40 sump collectively about 90-100 gal. a mag 7 and 2 heaters. and yes the 2 heaters did come on. had 6 t5 ho bulbs

Great pump! Switched my mag 7 to Eheim, never looked back. Cooler, too!

My place stays around 78-79, and tank usually stays about what the house is. I'm a little confused though. So you guys are saying get a larger pump and it will lower the heat?

Is the eheim more quiet as well?

I am not saying a larger pump will reduce heat. I have no evidence behind that. Wider return tubing would reduce friction ad reduce heat. Maybe replumb your setup?

if the pump is working too hard to push the water it is going to heat up and then you get heat transfer but if your keeping your house at nearly 80 degrees you can expect the water in the tank to heat up to match the ambient air temp in your house.
