Is it still standard to put a rimless tank on pink builders foam?

Colin

Yes, I believe so unless you have a PVC bottom. I am getting a rimless tank, and the tank builder strongly suggested that I place a 3/4" foam underneath.

you have to check with the tank builder. It will void the warranty on certain tanks.

Just currious how big is your tank? 3/4 seems really big. I had 1/2 under but it needs replacing, and just currious if it is actually necessary.

Might be hard to track him down, but I'll give it a shot.

Dave is that your 100 gallons? What thickness foam did you use?

I'm using 3/4" foam. It is specified by glass cages for their rimless tanks.

What are the dangers of not using it?
Cause i didn't put my new tank on any...

I just grabbed the new 93 rimless Perfecto. Going on a custom stand, so I'm curious as well to the answer.

Stress points created by uneven surface or surface imperfections could lead to cracks/breakage.

I'll also add that this very topic has been heavily debated, ie, foam or no foam, thickness, etc.

Foam usage is essentially an insurance and usually, a means to preserve manufacturer warranties.

Stress points like was said, but also, most tank manufacturers will not honor the tank warranty if they specify you should use it and you dont. Many also will not honor a warranty unless the tank is on their stand, so custom stands can also void tank warranties. Not that I would let that stop me from putting mine on a custom stand, however.

edit: sorry, got beat out to the tank warranty comment!

Yeah Chris built it 4 years ago and until Monday it was on what I think is 1/2in cause it measures just a tad over that.

To make a long story short I miss measured my opening and the casing is to thick and have no way to plane 1/4 off of it. I thought I could ditch the foam but don't want to do that now.

i figured when you said you had no idea how to get in touch with him lol.
he told me to use it so i always have.even the slightest imperfection[high spot being the worst] in the surface that a frameless tank is setting on could cause a stress point.

Chris always recommend foam on flat glass bottoms.

Edit: Chris always recommend foam on flat glass bottoms.

Use foam why take a chance, my 150 has it. You can always hide it with trim.

Foam is limited as to what it can correct as well. A properly built and installed stand doesn't need anything to "correct" it. Foam should be used to absorb any shock and to correct the smallest of imperfections.
