Skimmer neck cleaner

scramer74;1024316 wrote: So back to Jamos question. So the sludge built up on the neck just goes back down for the skimmer to essentially reprocess it?
Yes
To further clarify , when the skimming occurs 90% rides the bubble train in to skimmer cup town , the other 10% builds up in the cups neck , after several days so much builds up it effects the effectiveness of the skimmer , so I have to clean the neck although my cup isn't even half full , then it takes a day to re break in , so by knocking the heaviest of the crud off to be RE SKIMMED I keep my skimmer running at an optimal rate .
The gunk doesn't go in to the sump or tank , just blasted apart by the pump and bubbles .

I made up those percentages , honestly idk how much is actually pushed out opposed to the amount sticking to the neck

Still curing

Ok, gotcha, thanks Terry! I'm glad I'm not the only one that this was happening to. I'm kind of new to this so I just figured I was doing something wrong ;-)

Na bud I don't think that your doing something wrong so long as some makes its way in the cup.
As far as I know its the same with all skimmers , I believe bio load plays a part less fish is less food and poop , more fish would naturally build up faster.

Works

I just used a heavy bead of frag glue , I also took the time t clean up the cut so it sat well , I had to hold it in place a few minutes then sat the bottle beside it and let it rest against it wile it cured.
It took about 6 hours and it was solid but lots of stuff would work other than super glue , jb weld & caulk I bet would be good.

So using the squeegee once a day Im seeing good dark skim maybe a little dryer.

I just cleaned the mud off the squeegee after 5 days this is what I wiped off it.
Best part is I didn't get my hands nasty

Nice!

I haven't got mine on yet, maybe tonight!

Does it leave a little skim on the neck? As you said it works better a little dirty!

Yes it leaves little so there is no re break in it keeps on skimming

I've been kicking around the idea of making my own skimmer neck cleaner after seeing all these post floating around the forums. I wanted something more hands free and automated more like the ones you would find for sale. Been looking at extremely low speed high torque DC gear motors and wiring it to my apex to come on once a day. Hopefully I can start a build thread on that if I ever get off my butt and start making one.

That would be cool , I was thinking about something automated as well but this was easy and cheap.
