So just how important is the PH at 8.3?

I spent a good year trying to get my PH into the ideal range. All it did was cause problems and dead corals.

After I gave up and let it just be where it wanted 7.9-8.1 everything just started doing better.

As long as youre not dipping below 7.8 at night dont worry about it

you are correct as long as Alk is stable and above 3.0 and Calcium above 400, I have never worried nor checked PH in years....3-4 years maybe?

However, corals will generally calcify at a higher rate when ph is in 8.0 to 8.3 range.

but it is good to know an awesome and easy way to move it up if you choose. I might get one anyway....

wow! i just walked thru my bedroom and glanced over at my apex and the ph was at 8.24, it was 8.03 last time i looked a few hours ago. i freaked out and ran to unplug my kalk ato, but everything looked good. i got to thinking about it and realized, i opened the windows and turned on my attic fan today at 10:50 for the first time in a few months bc its so nice outside. im now 110% convinced i have a co2 issue. how do i post a screen shot of my apex graph?

I just bought 9lbs of soda lime to give this a try. My apartment is always closed up, I'm sure I have a CO2 issue. My pH never goes above 8.0 and usually is around 7.85.

Call them back, speak to a manager and argue the hazmat fee. Point out that on their website the product states it is not hazmat, and that other Airgas stores in the ATL area do not charge it.

did u get urs from airgas also?

what i stated is just...; :^(

a DC is not the same as retail. they have a transfer fee and that's what they are calling a hazmat fee. as stated they got miffed at me for even asking. i called 2 stores and they told me the same thing.

the salesman was backing up both locations and the local branch's manger would not wave it. But Nicky was great I will be testing some soon and then if all goes well getting with some to purchase some so be ready. i might be picking up some Friday...hint, hint....

Yep, CO2 from human resparation does impact the pH in our tanks. I have seen many examples on my Apex graphs. Check this post for an extreme example: http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=29263&highlight=friends">http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=29263&highlight=friends</a>

People have said that simply taking fresh air from ourside and feeding it into your skimmer air intake will help...

i wish i could post my graph, my tank went from 8.03 to 8.33 in about 5 and a half hours. i closed the windows thru the hottest part of the day and the tank never dropped below 8.29. maybe i should just start leaving the tank room windows open at night, level out the low point at night and prob bring in enough oxygen to keep ph up majority of the day

I was having weird ph swings. 7.65-7.98.... According to the apex, which could use a calibration.

My system is run by a CA reactor, and gets VERY frequent water changes. Alk maintains at 3.5 and ca stays at 420, per seachem and Elos.

The weird swings were still happening. I decided to drip Kalk for 3 days straight. The pH slowly went from 7.70-8.05 over three days. Now, it is not dropping. This is day 3 with out a PH swing, and day 3 of no Kalk drip. I'm guessing some sort of ionic imbalance that the hydroxide ion helped correct....

Any other thoughts? I've been meaning to get some soda lime.

I used to think my house wasn't very air tight since it was built in the 70's. I notice a big difference when I open the windows though, kind of blows my mind. Here's an interesting chart showing what happened when we went on vacation from July 20 through July 29. I told my wife this means we need to take more vacations, the house was closed up and no one was home. PH dropped very quickly after we got back. You can also see when I was dosing Alk as well. I started dosing more frequently recently so as to not raise it so much at one time.

I used a program called snip. If you are running windows go to start- run and type the command "snip". You can then highlight a portion of the screen and save it as an image. I think you have to have windows 7. Before snip there was a free program called screenprint32 that i used.

Actually, I was wrong, I go to Start then type "snip" in the search programs and files box, not the run command.

thank you so much! check out my graph, i opened the window at 10:50 am, then swapped my kalk ato for rodi water bc my ph hit 8.37 at around 12:50 am. look at the ph jump from opening the window!

Charles, try the Kalk drip until you get the soda lime. That really helped my issue. If you need further instructions, call or text me.

well after getting some stuff together and doing a dry fit. I have decided that I dont like it too much. might just put some lexan on the bottom and make a base.
