Lately I have been hearing a surge of water coming from my drains into the sump every once in a while. Loud enough that I jump up thinking its overflowing the sump, it is not. I cannot see inside my overflows to see if the water level fluctuates but I do know the durso air hole is not obstructed. The surge lasts for about 4-5 seconds

I seem to notice it more when my canopy fans kick on (pointed at water surface) or my MP40's ramp up while on Reef Crest mode. I'm thinking it could have something to do with that. Thoughts?

On another note, I have 2 drain pipes going into a 7" ring filter sock in my sump. There is about a 6" air gap from the pipe to the water surface in the sock. This is quite loud, what is a good way to quiet that down?

Plumbing is the one aspect of this hobby I will always be a noob at...

I have the same issue with my return. I don't think it's the PH's but I still haven't figured it out. My durso air hole is clean as well, but I'm still trying to solve this issue.

One the second note, I add a short piece of PVC to inlet into my sump so that it extends pretty close to the bottom of the sock. No noise whatsoever! I of course don't clue it in place so that i can change out my socks.

I had similar problem. The MP40 definitely has an effect. Try shutting them off for a bit and see if it's still surging.
Have you made any changes in your the return flow? Another possible problem could be too much flow that your overflow cannot cope with.

I tried this on a different tank I had and it didnt seem to get much better. Just a different sound. Ill try it on this one and see if it helps any.

I will try shutting them down and see if that is the cause. Ive had them up higher lately so Im hoping that is it.

I will say that I noticed some silicone coming off of the seams on the overflows a couple weeks ago. It is just at the edges so Im thinking maybe it was the lil bit extra that didnt get cut off at the factory. At least thats what I hope.
