So here is the true definition of a reef junkie. Got a 911 call from my mother-in-law about my father-in-law's tank. I just landed in Denver and am en-route to their house to do a emergency tank rebuild! We were already coming for Christmas anyway though...so it worked out. Lol

So here's the story. He has had a 50 bowfront forever and was one of the reasons I got into the hobby. He started a new job this year that requires a LOT of traveling. Unfortunately that means the tank has gone downhill big time. So his Christmas present is going to be a tank rebuild and try to improve the system to be able to handle nutrient export a little more efficiently. Hopefully he will like it. He doesn't get home till after Christmas. Will be updating later with some before and after pics.

That's awesome will be a great surprise. I'm sure he will love it

Well the lights just came on and I got my first good look at the tank. Wooooow...can you say hair algae and cyano? Rolling my sleeves up...

Agree with SNS. Does not look like a lot of LR to replace and only a coral or 2 to put back...

Yeah that's the direction I was leaning. Sucks though cause its a awesome piece of rock.

Latest update: broken glass (not the aquarium)+my finger=more stitches than I even want to talk about. Now everything in the tank has to be done with my left hand. Hanging my head in frustration at the moment.

Man the things some people will do in order to get out work ;-)

Shouldn't be to bad... pull the rock pour H2O2 over it. Add a GFO reactor

Cool idea to do things with the Father in Law. My in laws can't stand me (except her grand parents) and think the tanks are childish.

For once, I am going to keep my mouth shut. Hehehehehe

I am lucky. My father-in-law and I are great friends. The kind that can tell each other when we are being complete donkeys. LOL

looks like a job for H2O2 to me, that or look for another nice sized rock, a few bags of sand and start all over. then toss in a couple reactors along with a good skimmer your father n law should be on the road. by the way you wouldn't be in the market for adopting a father n law? I sure could use someone to dote over my tank for awhile.

I have to admit, I won the in-law lottery. They are two of the greatest people I've ever met. My father-in-law brings me beer every time I see him AND he is a saltwater tank junkie! I would say reef but he is just starting to get into coral.
I haven't messed with the h2o2 method yet. Won't that kill off all the bacteria?

I just had to do the h2o2 treatment on nearly all the rock in my 150 because of bryopsis and haven't had any issues. just pull the rock out and pour a couple 16 ounce bottles over the rock and let it soak for 10 - 15 min then rinse the rock off with fresh salt water.Ralph (mystrybox) suggested this but I added a heavy duty nylon bristle and I mean heavy duty bristles brush and scrubbed the areas of algae infestation during the soaking period.
a week after the treatment coraline algae was back and I never had an issue with ammonia or any other nutrient problems

when you put the rock back in the display you will still see some hair algae but it will be completely gone in a few days
