Tank build in Colorado!

What other inhabitants are in there besides the clown?

Nothing too crazy. The clown, a couple damsels, a blue throat trigger, lawn mower Benny and various cuc members.

+1 on the H2O2 treatment. After fighting GHA for most of the year, while running a Refugium with Chaeto for 6 months, and about 2 months with GFO in a reactor with no success, I recently treated the bulk of my rocks with H2O2. There's a huge difference between the untreated and treated rocks. I expect you'll see a difference overnight.

I feel for your father-in-law. After I first set up my 65g, I was traveling regularly, and put an automatic feeder on it that was dumping too many pellets, so I think I have a ton of phosphates built up. It will take a while to leech back from the rocks and sand, but I'm religious with the water changes, and I think the GFO and macro in the fuge are starting to have an effect. I'm hoping the H2O2 was enough to clean up the GHA so that the clean up crew can do their work if it reappears.

Good luck with the tank!

So I did get back to work after my trip to the ER yesterday. It's amazing how much longer it takes to do things when all you have is one good hand. Was concentrating on the filtration side of things to start with. His old setup consisted of a hob filter and in tank heater. Not the greatest...

So here is stage one of his rebuild: diy 20 gal sump with a bubble trap separating the skimmer and return section (now you all can probably figure out where my injury came from, stupid crap glass cutter). Also hooked him up with a reef octopus skimmer rated at 100gal, a mag 4 return pump, new heater and filter sock setup. I am also adding a gfo reactor but had to order it. The lfs didn't have any small reactors. On a good note, the skimmer hasn't even been running a day and is already pulling NASTY skimmate!

Love the bluethroat. I have 2 of them myself in QT waiting to go to my DT!!!

So I got back to work on the tank today. Got a good bit of work done. Cleaned the entire tank inside and out, blacked out the back of the tank with black vinyl, dialed in a new CPR overflow with aqua lifter backup, finished the ato setup, changed out the t5 bulbs and added led moonlights. Got water mixing for a big water change tomorrow and doing the h2o2 treatment on the rocks. Forward progress...

I was working so hard I didn't have time to take any before the lights went out, lol. I will be posting some pics tomorrow. It's starting to look like a tank again and not a green afro.

Not yet. He knows I'm doing some work on the tank but not to what extent. Poor guy, first thing he asked me was how bad did his tank look.

Jumping on board, nice thing that you are doing! not much from me to offer help but I'm here for a reason! keep the progress! you can put that tank nice again!

A new beginning, lol. Looking pretty empty. Took the fish and some surviving coral to the lfs. Going to help him go in a new direction he was talking about. Got all the rock cooking in some saltwater in the basement. It's looking good so far, the h2o2 seems to be doing the trick.

He has had this clown for three years with two different anemones and had no hosting success. Peeked in the tank this morning and saw this!

Well I was hoping to put the live rock back in tomorrow morning but its not looking so good. Algae is all gone but I just tested the water in the rubbermaid and the ammonia is up around 2ppm. I wasn't really expecting to have to go through a cycle. The rock was only out of water for maybe 20 minutes. I went ahead and did a 100% water change. I fly back to GA on Friday. Any suggestions?

It didn't look like a huge amount of live rock....... I'd consider doing this;

Change out 100% of the water in the live rock holding tank. Leave it alone til thursday, and check the ammonia level. The Ammonia level might have spiked just from the dieoff of the GHA, and not from re-cycling due to dieoff in the rock it'self.

If it's comparably little live rock compared to water volume, AND your test comes in at a reasonable reading on Thursday, you might well be able to return the rock to the DT, but that's just what I'd consider doing.

Buy your mother in law some Prime or equivalent and have her dose the tank every other day or so. Prime converts ammonia into a far less toxic form.... This is just for back up.

None of these are optimum, but leaving an unassembled tank wouldn't be a great option either.

Edit: Your father in law also has some pretty hardy inhabitants in there too

Quick update: Things are looking better. After a 100% water change and adding some Prime last night ammonia is down to 0.25 this morning. Hopefully it was just a spike from the algae die off. Going to let it keep going and check again tomorrow.
