I guess my Apex decided to go crazy and keep my chiller on. Tank water is at 58 degrees. I've already tossed my 8 year old onyx clowns and a couple leopard wrasses. Anthias and firefish are lifeless on the bottom and my radiant wrasse is still buried. Fortunately, the clowns I picked up from CCC are in my frag tank and I've yet to move corals over to my display. Really bummed right now. The clowns I've had since before my son was born and they were "his." Crappy. :mad2:

Oh man. So sorry to hear this. :-(

Yes sir that's bad! I just went on my first vacation since starting he hobby and had a couple of fatalities while gone. When your OCD like me it's tough leaving everything in the hands of someone else! Sorry about what happened for sure! Hope you get it (Apex) squared away.

put tank water in pots and put them on the stove for a bit.

Once you get the water warmed up everything should be fine.

We had many boxes of fish and coral arrive REALLY cold some times and it usually never mattered once they were acclimated and warmed up.

Sorry man ... so frustrating/disappointing given the time you/we put in on our tanks. Glad to hear you had some stuff spared in your other tank.

My apex has gone out twice over the last 4 years, both times the temp reading went off the chart (both ways). I'm not sure if you figured out exactly what happened to it yet or not. I know 2 other guys I deeply respect in the hobby that lost their tank this way. In the process of helping others, controller failure will happen at some point ... have backup temp reading protection (i.e. ranco controller in between Apex and devices). If it wasn't for other's experiences, I would have had the same thing happen.

Again, sorry for the losses you had man ... that really stinks.

Sorry man it sucks losing things hope you get it all worked out

Matt,

How in the world did your tank get to 58 degrees? Did you have a chiller get stuck on or do you live in a walk-in cooler?!? Certainly your house is in the mid 70's. It's a constant 80 outside.

Not debating your crash, but the temp??? There's gotta be something else going on (bad temp probe, etc).

Sorry to hear that.
Another temperature controller installed before the apex should help in the case this occurs, then just remember my friend with his apex configured to send him alerts over any parameter out of range. Hope your alive stock recuperate.

Well, the problem was that my chiller has always had a bad circuit board. It constantly reads 104. I was comfortable with the Apex as the fail safe. Somehow my Apex lost connectivity to my EB8s. Despite the fallback and set being "off," the chiller stayed on. I had yet to hook up a heater because I hadn't needed one. I have restored connectivity with EB8s and have ordered a ranco controller as a fail safe. The thing that really gets me is that I pulled the suffering clowns not knowing what was going on and wanted them out of what seemed to me to be their misery. I used my tongs to get them out and never even touched the water. This was at 4:00 AM. My immediate thought was brook since I had added a bluespot a few weeks prior. I laid in bed wondering what the heck was going on. I got back up and went into the room that he chiller is in and heard it running, then it hit me. I immediately unplugged it and plugged a heater in. I just got home from the gym and the anthias seem to be "waking up." I even more mad now that I could have unnecessarily ended the clowns life. A hard lesson learned, I guess...

Ouch. So sorry to hear this, Man. Best of luck with your recovery!!!

Which plug on your power strip was your chiller plugged into? I know 4 and 8 are relayed plugs and ensure appliances actually switch off. The others don't recognize lower powered appliances, and have a hard time turning them off. Probably not the case with your chiller, but if you are not using 4 or 8, you may want to ensure you are in the future...

Best of Luck!!!

I sorry to here about the fatalities. I've had a couple of power issues with my apex, but luck has been on my side ( that and I can't afford a vacation ;-). How have the corals done?

After you get everything settled and if you feel like a trip come on by and I break out the coral snips you are welcome to frags of most anything that is in my tank, it won't replace your finned friends but maybe a restart might help.
