Tank in unfinished basement

I am wanting to upgrade to a large tank, but with the renovation plans my wife has with the house I can only have a tank in my home office(12' x10' room on 2nd floor) or our unfinished basement for a long time.

My question is are there any problems with keeping a tank in an unfinished basement that I am not thinking of?

I understand that I can't control the temp, but it stays cool year round due to only side being exposed.

yes, major problems you arent thinking of.....at least in the 12 x 10 room you have limits. An unfinished basement is like a canvas for an addicted reefer....I can already see the pvc maze

Its definitely cheaper to heat the tank rather than cool it (heaters VS chiller). I dont see to many negatives...

HAHA! But honestly, you might be dead on. I have started thinking about going with a 100g rubbermaide sump and using a 55g RR tank i have sitting around for a refugium.

I wish I had the same temp control in my basement... also 3 sides underground w/ poured walls, and it ranges from 55 in the winter to low 80's in the summer.
I just set up a 55 in my basement, and I can tell you that it was a little bit of an eye opener when I started heating the water. I had to use a total of 600w in a 55g tank... one 300w heater had only managed to get it up to 63 in 18 hours.

Ouch! My swings aren't nearly that bad. Temp stays in the high 50s to low 60s year round.

But I think I have decided against putting a tank in the basement. After pricing out everything I just don't feel like spending that type of money just to put a tank in my basement.

I am now thinking about sticking with a tank in my office, but moving up from my 14g BC to a 30g cube. It is on the second floor, so I don't think I can go much bigger than that. This won't allow me to keep all the fish I want, but it will allow me to expand on my corals and maybe add a small wrase to go with my clowns.

Now the problem I have is I will have to transfer everything at once. I will have to put the new tank where I have my BC setup currently. I would like to start over with Reef Saver Rock from BRS, so I am thinking about setting up a temparary tank in my basement to cure the rock.

Any thoughts or helpful suggestions on a move like this would be great.
