tank size/fish

Is there a scientific based site for determining the min. tank size for each species of fish, and perhaps a explanation of the method used to make that determination.

I would think the best you can do is look at their "natural" environment and adult size. Are they a free swimmer in open water, or do they hug the rocks and sand?

+1 I think it has a great guide...look for the fish and it goves you a wealth of info

I am looking for maybe a study conducted by a marine biologist or someone with those type crudentials. I am sure that Live Aquaria has lots of info but they are trying to sell fish, not that their advice is not good advice.I am looking for their source of info I guess.

These type of guides are provided by companies that sell fish for profit. They always seem to underestimate the tank requirements. Volume is important but so are the actual dimensions (swimming room), other tank inhabitants, etc.

Grouper, there has been much debate on other forums about minimum tank size for different species of fish. Seems like most stuff out there is anecdotal in nature. I would be interested in seeing some empirical data as well.

I agree they sell fish but I found their recommendations are pretty accurate. I would, however, wonder who exactly sets those parameters.

Live Aquaria has one of if not the best return policies and I believe it's in their best interest to do and recommend the "right" thing IMHO.

Live Aquaria is a fine company , no argument here but I am more interested in info obtained by a controlled experiment or observation or as Staceyy 22 said empirical data, not on theory or opinions. Thanks for the responses anyway.

The most scientific source/website I use is http://www.fishbase.com">www.fishbase.com</a>

It usually has information as to where the fish is found (deths, etc.), but I don't recall seeing any aquarium size reccomendations.
