treating fish with prazipro

I just can't seem to have any luck with clowns as of late. About 5 weeks ago, I had a pair of clowns both pass from an internal parasite / worm (white stringy poop) and they completed stopped eating.


My other fish in the tank are all great, eating like pigs, so I waited a while to make sure everything was good in the system. I picked up a pair of beautiful onyx clowns on saturday and the female is not eating. Today I finally see the white stringy poop. I am convinced it is not my system because she has literally been in there less than 48 hours.

I picked up garlic, an entice formula, and mixed brine, mysis, and parasite killer mixed food all in a cup.... everyone ate except for the female.


How can I beat this if she won't eat? I heard good things about prazipro, but I was wondering if anyone has used this before?

I am thinking about putting her in a little 5 gallon bucket and dipping her with prazipro for about 15 minutes, but I don't want the move to stress her out too much. Any suggestions?

Did you see the fish eat in the store before you bought them?

Unfortunately not... they were in QT in the store for 2 weeks and then in the main display tanks for about 4 weeks. - that is my fault.

Oddly enough... soon after feeding she was going after some random debris floating in the tank so I threw some pellets in there... and she went after one of them. That is the best sign I have had so far.

That is a good sign. It's never a bad idea to ask the LFS staff to offer the fish you intend to buy, some food. Firstly it makes sure that they are healthy and relaxed enough to eat, secondly, if they freak out a bit after arriving home with you and don't eat, you at least know when/what they ate last.

If a fish doesn't eat in the store - leave it there. In my hobbyist days I wouldn't buy if the fish didn't eat.

Another method to the madness is, if it ate in the shop, and then doesn't eat/stops eating at home, you can start looking for a cause.

I use prazi with all new parasite prone fish, especially wrasse. It's very easy to use and is reef safe. The only downside is that you have to turn off your skimmer while using. I have had some acros brown a little from the 2 weeks that the treatment take. I treat the whole tank every time...

Hmm, I am "working from home" all week (aka: watching my tank and checking emails) and this morning I put 3 drops of garlic extract in the tank, soaked brine and pellets in garlic and then fed and she ate 3-4 pellets. She didn't seem interested in the brine at all though.

But at least she is eating! And I have not seen any white poop today (*knock on wood)

To answer your original question, you can treat a whole tank with prazi pro. Dip wil be generally ineffective. Especially if trying to treat internal parasites.

What type of quarantine did they go through at the store?

I am not sure of there exact set up, but I know they use copper treatment and lowered salinity.
