I got an open brain a year back, and it's been doing pretty badly. A good bit of it's skeleton is showing, and it's covered in algae. Should i take a dremel and start carving away it's old skeleton? I think the algae is killing the rest of the coral.

Sounds like there are other issues. Parameters? Any fish pick at it? Lighting? Placement?

Do a coral dip with iodine. After the dip, take a small tooth brush and lightly brush to get the algea off. Try to stay away from the flesh. I had one dying off awhile ago did this and it started coming back. In a week or so if you have not seen improvement... do another dip.

I wouldn't cut the skeleton away, but that's me.

I would clean the algae off of it and possibly relocate it to another flow/lighting area. I would also feed it. Either some Rods, Nutramar OVO, or Cyclopeze. Just make sure you do this with any water pumps OFF so it has a chance to eat it.

Another thing to do is to get it up slightly off the sand by using a piece of PVC. I have no idea why this has a positive effect on brains, but it seems to IME.
