These fish are digging and messing up the tank. Is there a reason to keep them. Is there a service being done here that I am missing?

that's what wrasses do. they are sand burrowers. they "sleep" there at night and hide in the sand when they get scared. while there isn't any huge benefit to it they do help keep the sand stirred up so that detritus doesn't collect in it

What kind of wrasses? Most wrasses do a great service when it comes to eating unwanted pests

They are turning the sand - that's a good thing.

What kind of wrasses? Many will eat pests like flatworms.

I love wrasses, they're one of my favourite types of fishes.

My 8 wrasse don't make any type of mess what so ever!

Really wondering what kind you have and how long you've had them?

The majority of wrasse I (we) keep actually sleep inside cracks and holes of rock. Three of my 8 sleep in the sand.
In the QT (and probably DT) they were diving around in the sand and swishing sand around. My guess was to check out the area and get their sleeping quarters as they wanted it...
After a few days, they just dive in and go to sleep. Maybe they just need to get them a comfortable area, give it a few days.
