Vortech vs. Tunze

No, but for some reason, the wife put her foot down when I started talking about cutting in from the outside....

Christine.....He's "letting" you have a baby, the least you could do is let his wreck the house.

Im debating between an MP40 and a tunze nano wave box for my 58g tank. Im leaning tunze at the moment mainly because it as to be silent.

Waves/waveboxes scare me because of the stress they put on silicone seams. And the looks actually makes me a bit seasick (despite the fact that I dont get seasick on boats).

You better be careful!!!!

Ok,well I've seen alot of pros and cons for both units.
I like the fact that the Vortech's are outside the tank, but I also like the versitility of the Tunze's,but are they really worth the kind of money you have to shell out for a couple of pumps and a controller?

I currantly use two K-4's and one K-3 for flow plus my return. These might be good enough for flow, but I can't control them like Tunze's or Vortech's.
If I put them on some kind of wave maker, they "chatter".
I have been told that I could put a section of 1/4" tubing on the front of the shafts so they want jump back and forth when they are turned on,but IDK.
Has anybody tried this?
Thanks again.

Yes, you pay a premium for the vortech's and tunzes -there's no doubt about that. But I assure you that there's a reason that almost every successful tank out there uses some combination of them in their tank - it's because they work, and they work well.

You *can* have a successful reef tank with Korilla's. You can also run a marathon in a pair of flip flops...

ares;408876 wrote: that = priceless (though tunze and vortech do a darn good job of putting a price tag on it... :p )

Back when I was building my 90, I would have NEVER thought about spending $420 for what I considered at the time to be a glorified powerhead. So, I did what any man would do, and I asked my fiance for a Vortech for Christmas.

Two years later and I will leave it at this -- she bought the first one, and I bought the second one. Well worth the money.

I replaced my Koralias with Tunze Streams this fall. They take up just a little bit more room, but the flow is incredible. Nothing like turning one on on the right side and seeing the water level on the left side swell up.

My tank did turn cloudy for a few days after I hooked up the Tunze's, they were kicking up all the detrius that the Koralias missed.

Anyone look at a tank with a Vortech on each end and think of the Napster logo? Looks like a pair of headphones bulging at the sides.

Also with the Tunze's, Neptune controllers can control them, and Digital Aquatics is coming out with a module to control them (up to 4 pumps), so that's money for a controller you don't have to shell out. I'm really hoping the module is released before Xmas so I can add it to my wish list.

I have heard that Digital Aquatics has plans for the Vortechs in the works as well. Possibly the same module?

It might be i don't know. But my question is what is the point of using a controller if it comes with one at purchase. Doesn't seem logical to me.

ares;408926 wrote: I presume to integrate into a larger overall program? Im guessing here... seems like you could still plug them into a power pack to get food timer functions, not sure what more youd need? but more options are never a bad thing.

Yeah options are not a bad thing. And I guess if they gave you a discount that would be a plus.

Also I love my vortech! Very little space and works awesome!

Suppose you want to turn a number of things off for feeding: skimmer, pumps, return, etc, you'd still have to push multiple buttons to turn stuff off.

I have asked for a more detailed time frame on the DA forums, but haven't heard back. I'd like to integrate that module with an automatic feeder and my other equipment so the tank can feed itself. Less stuff I have to do means more time to sit and enjoy. Also, it would mean that the tank is fed at the same time every day, not if/when I get around to it. I would probably put the feeder on a mechanical timer, which is on a controlled timer. So every 2 days it would feed. I'd probably run it Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday, and feed a frozen cube on Friday evenings so the fish are out and active if I have guests over.

Also, if a Vortech module is made, this is what I see as one of the possibilities: Hook a normally closed relay into a regular outlet on the same circuit that the tank runs on. Connect this relay to one of the "switches" from DA. Set up a program so when the power is off to the outlet (either by going out or by tripping the breaker), an alarm trips and runs a timer on the Vortech's battery backup (don't know the time settings, I'd imagine have one on for 15min, then the other, alternating back and forth). That'd just be my idea...

VorTech
Pros
smaller in tank footprint
wireless operation between multiple VorTechs
push a lot of water
creates undertow type of currents
doesn't add heat to display

Cons
not "really" adjustable (points one way)
Can be hard to get perfectly aliened in order to make them quiet

Tunze
Pros
fully adjustable
push tons of water
proven customer service

Cons
bigger in tank footprint
wires in the tank
adds heat (although not much) to the tank

(snip)

In fairness, I'd add proven customer service in the "pro" column for the Vortechs as well.

Do any of you guys/gals use the 6102. The reason I ask is the reliability on these pumps for me just was not there. Out of the 3 I bought new 0 are still working after almost 3 years. I still have a 6100 running that is 6 years old. The 6102's were the first streams were they combined the driver and motor block, and for some reason (3 out of 3 bad) I can see why they would be up to thier 4th revision. I still need to add more flow I just have not figured out with what. Rodger just told me to buy a laptop power supply wich I did then after the motors died I am left with a 1000 dollar bag of junk. So has any one else had this problem.

i have 2 vortechs .. have used tunze too...

yes you can hear the vortechs, but its worth it imo :) LOTS of programs to run. makes lots of undertow pulling that water through...

no heat transfer

small footprint

i like them

Alright,I think I'm going with the Tunze's ,I think it will do what I want to do.I think I can get a wave action without a wavebox,if not I'm going to play around with building my own wave box.I've seen some good DIY's on you tube.

Does anybody know if you can paint acrylic and put it in your tankor do I need to find black acrylic?

You can paint acrylic with any basic paint. I used rustoleum on my last acrylic paint without issue. Just paint the outside and you won't have to worry about it coming off. If you're trying to cover up an existing color.... well, that's a different story.

I guess what I mean is if I build a clear wave box,can I paint it and put it on the back wall of the tank inside the tank in the water without killing everything?
