Vortech vs. Tunze

Its possible to use Black Krylon fusion also.. I know people that have painted overflows and plumbing that goes in the tank and been in there a few years with zero ill effects..

Cool,I think this is going to be a neat DIY project.I have some ideas to kinda mask the apperance of the box so it isn't just a big black box in my tank.

Just make sure you give it time to properly dry then give it a rinse to remove any possible chems soft of the surface..

Does anybody know if you can paint acrylic and put it in your tankor do I need to find black acrylic?

I might be reading too much into this.. .but DON'T count on a standing wave for all of your circulation. The wave is SECONDARY to good circulation around the tank, and isn't adequate on it's on. If you use a wave box or tunzes to make a "Wave" you'll still need something to create real flow.

You are correct,I will be using another tunze for the good flow.

cool.. i know when i first thought about my vortechs i only wanted a "wave", and had to get through my head that it didn't really DO MUCH haha.

Does anybody know what kind of epoxy's are safe to go into our tanks and where I could buy it?
Also, will weldon stick PVC pipe to acrylic ?

Aquamend is safe. Many people use it for mounting frags. It's by the super glues and paints at Home Depot.

Jason,

I have some 6101 Tunzes and controller if you're interested: http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=34818">http://www.atlantareefclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=34818</a>

Save a lot of coin over new!

I'm pretty sure I have a wavebox too. I'll have to double check though

I've been using the Tunze 6100 and 6101 for years now and love them. Never had a Vortech so I really can't comment on them. A couple things that came to mind while reading this thread:

The Tunze pumps create an undertow as well.

The 6XX1 and later Tunze pumps (currently available) can be operated off battery power.

Depending on your rock work and coral placement, the "grapefruit" can be totally hidden (as it is in my tank). Obviously, you wouldn't be able to do that in a tank like Chris'.

You are not forced into buying a controller you may not need (see below) with the Tunze pumps.

I LOVE the programming flexibility you get running Tunze pumps on the Apex controller. Separate programs based on time of day, lights on or off, feed timer on or off, a "storm" to occur at the end of the feed timer to "shake everything loose", almost anything you can think of. It is really cool.

I know I am coming in late to this party, but have a question about these too. For a 55 gallon (standard) tank, could I get by with one Vortech or Tunze? Would this be able to give me a good wave action in the tank or would I need two to alternate? Thanks.

A nano wavebox would give you plenty of wave action, but you'd still want other powerheads. When you create a wave in the tank, it helps keep detrius in suspension, but you need flow to take that stuff out of the tank. I'd think a nano wavebox with 2 6025s would give you plenty of flow.

You could take a Vortech MP40W and put it on "reef crest" or one of the other modes, and while it wouldn't make a wave, it would still be enough flow for a 55 IMHO.

Truthfully, I am a little worried about the wave boxes due to the amount of stress it will put on the seams. I was more wondering about a MP20, MP40, or Tunze equivalent. I don't really want a standing wave, just the constant action in the tank. Thanks.

On RC, Roger has stated that appx 10% reduction in tank life, much less than the time it takes for silicone to yellow and glass to get scratched. He said most people will replace tanks before any effect from the waves are shown.

"Most" people.....:confused2:

I dont want to be one of the "few". Not a risk, IMO, when other, less risky, moethods are out there. Also, you need to take his comment with a grain of salt. He is a very helpful and knowledgeable manufacturer, but he is</em> the manufacturer, so he isnt going to give info to contradict his product.

remember....

there is a reason that soldiers march out of cadence on bridges...
