What is going on - cloudy water and green skimmate all of a sudden...

Info:

4 months old now
210gal
75gal sump w cheato fuge
Sro3000
180ish lbs marcorock
2in sandbed
7 fish (all small clowns, chromis, goby, coris wrasse - tiny bio load in other words)

Running a very light gfo load for some brown algae concerns that have been around since the tank finished its cycle. I have a two little fishes 150 reactor that is only about 1/4 full of gfo.

I added 2.5 cups of carbon in a media bag to my sump on Tuesday to try to help with the cloudy water and it has only very slightly helped.

1.024 salinity
80f
pH 7.8-8.0 (seems low all of sudden)
Cal 430
Alk 9.2
Mag 1600 (why?!)

Last weekend I did a 40gal water changed and used reef crystals (1st time using it; previously I have always used IO salt). The water has been cloudy ever since... On Monday I added 16oz of brs 2 part cal (tested 350 before and 430 after). So unfortunately I don't know which is to blame for the cloudy water.

I had previously used kalkwasser in the top off to up my poor cal levels from having used IO salt but it never could significantly raise my cal.

Prior to doing the Reef crystals water change my skimmate has always been a thick nasty brown color, but now the wet skim is super bright green instead of brown...? Algae bloom or something happening? I might also add I have never had any type of green algae ever in this tank (aside from the cheato which is green I guess); its just been diatoms and what I think is Dino.

Aside from the cloudy water and green skimmate nothing else seems different in the tank visually (no increase in any algae or anything like that).

Thoughts on what is going on here....

Thanks

It's been 5 days so far already... Any kind of typical time frame?

Usually takes about that long IME. The tank looks fairly new so it may take longer.

I would do some serious water changes and make sure your powerheads break the surface of the water.....

a bacteria bloom (or algae) can leave little dissolved O2 left for your fish, and they can die.....

I can't understand why this would coincide with my my previous water change though? I had zero issues until I did the water change...

Yes, it's possible that the chemistry was changed enough to cause either an algae (spores) or bacteria bloom.....trust me, it doesn't matter so much how it started, it's the issue that IT DID START.....

You could have zero Oxygen in your tank....

Others online said they did water changes and it didn't help.

Sounds like the only solution people had was 1. Wait it out 2. Run a uv

Then I saw people who said they waited and waited and it never went away on its own; so maybe option 2 is the only option?

Looks like there are no corals in there. Is the tank brand new?

Sounds to me like you may have a white bacterial bloom. It happens in freshwater, and I have also read it can be associated with carbon dosing, like with vodka. A UV is the quick solution, but I'd look at limiting nutrient inputs. There are also commercially available flocculants that can help clear the water. I would tell you to try a blackout, but I don't think white bacteria is photosynthetic to start with.

Yeah it's only 4 months old and was planning a fowl originally.

Really strange if this is nutrient related as I'm feeding super lite with only 7 little fish; big skimmer and lots of LR...

How are you mixing your water???

ro/di water since day 1
Saltwater mixed in tub with powerheads

10+ days of super cloudy water so a few days ago I bought a 24w Green Killing Machine from PetCo (seems cheaply built and unsure of its longevity). 2 days after I plugged it in my water is now much much clearer. I would imagine after another couple days my water will be crystal clear again!
