what is my dysfunction?

i am using the multiply by .056(i dont have it in front of me right now) for the hanna ppm, and the salifert has the conversion chart on the instructions..

when i see stuff kinda dying, i want to find out what might be doing it and change it! i do need to maybe wait stuff out :o) lol!

my ph is high (from what my apex probe says, i will be re zeroing it out tomorrow) it says 8.71 now!!!!!!!!!!

i am also doing water change tomorrow ( i think it has been ~12 days since last?) i usually pump it out of my sump to my manifold to get around 30g out of my ~330g total volume. I can do that much barely, then the pump starts to suck air..

when u say dose just vodka, do u mean it and vinegar, or just 1ml of vodka 2x a day? or replace the vinegar with a "bigger" vodka dose?

right now, i dose 15ml of vinegar at 12PM and 12AM. 1.2ml of vodka at same time. and the 3 tsp of baking soda to raise my alk.

I tested my phos and alk today to see what it has done and got:

Phos - Hanna - .23ppm
Alk - Salifert - 7.3dKH

lost a nice WWC Stardust chalice which rtn'd over last 2 days. It was in the same corner as my Utter Chaos colonies that bit the dust!

Straight vodka, restart with doing 10ml per day......since u have a 300 tank....u can slowly increase......

Can't u manually pump out more on a water change from display? If not, do it twice a week for a few months...

It's more important for you to maintain ALK at 8 or 9, then worry about fighting ph...

Change GFO every 3 days, change some sand now and then and some rock...

Edit: Phosphate is very high...very high

i have a 180g DT, 100g rubbermaid sump, 75g fuge, 60g frag tank, and 29g "extra" running on same system...

so 5ml on the 12s?

Edit:
falos;758205 wrote: In the same corner? rtn as in under 1day 24hrs time from first tissue loss was seen ?in chalice usuly they will peel back from one side to the other was there damage that didn't look right cuts, or patches missing. It's just weerd you would only lose corals near the same spot but different species. Just for giggles put a lps or softy you don't care about in the same place you may have a predator in the tank if its healthy wen you put it there then after the lights come on and there is damage its not a water parameter issue

i thought it was strange too.. i noticed the back 1/4 of the chalice was coming off last night around 10pm. This morning it was ~1/2 so i fragged a tiny bit off. when i got home tonight, it was all dead on the "main part" and the frag looked rough..

the rastas that are right next to where the utter chaos and the wwc chalice are fine..? weird..

You either on or off...

You need to decide whether u are "on" or "off" the ULNS....

Committ or not, do or do not.

If you do, then life will generally be easy untill u get some crazy algae like I did that loves ULNS...but for 5 or so years, life was easy!

I KNOW I have a backwoods way of doing things sometimes, but from reading MOST of the above posts:

Question: Are you dosing a bacterial source? If so what is it? Keep in mind that carbon dosing is just introducing food into your system FOR the bacteria. Most of the time you want to introduce the bacteria you want to be dominant.

If I were in this boat I would slow down or STOP the dosing and JUST do water changes.... and IMO 30g on 330g isn't going to do much of anything. I do 40g on my 120 about 1x every other week.

Observation: I'm sure you know what you're doing... BUT from the first post it looks like there is a LOT of tinkering going on with a LOT of stuff :)

Reefing is like a golf swing to me :) When something goes wrong don't start adding this and that... start taking things away until you've got nothing left but what you KNOW is a good solid stroke... THEN build from there again.

Good analogy! I suck at golf, so maybe thats why! :o)

I am not dosing any bac. I have anthias, etc so i usually feed at least 2x a day. I use mostly spectrum pellets (a pinch) in each side of my DT. 1-2x a week, i also add 1/2 cube of mysis maybe 1x a week. I feed coral every 3-4 days with reefkoi "powder" and lps pellets. Just started using some reef chilli instead of one of the reefkoi product feedings 1 x a week.

I guess i can get more water out, but that is one thing i hated about my last tank (WC out of the DT) and why i did a manifold, big sump, WC/Mixing station... just need to find an "easy" way of doing it. Though I thought the standard was 10% every 10 days?

10%? 5-6 years ago...and if u had 2 fish and softies, lol.

Stop feeding your photosynthetic corals! Maybe, once a month if u must.

I agree.. Suspend coral feeding...

The posts above lead me to believe your PO4 is going to be high w all the feeding going on.

I would do some big water changes and stop all the superfluous feedings :)

also, i heard that it is either nice sps or nice "others". as in if i go all ulns, sps will be awesome and happy, but other types will suffer. And oppositely, if i go a bit "dirty", z/p and lps will be great, and sps will suffer???

ok, just did a 9 bucket WC. so that was ~45g..

I cleaned the sand in the DT a bit and toothbrushed some of the rock. Then WC.

after change, i did 1.2ml vodka, 15ml vinegar, and 3 tsp of Baking Soda.
I know someone said start with 10ml , but i wasnt sure if they meant vodka or vinegar.. 10ml vodka to start seems a bit much. plus with the cleaning and big water change, i didnt want to change too much stuff again! :o)

i also changed out the GFO. I am only using 1/2 cup...

just did another 5g water change out of the connected 29g that had some detrius in there..

checked for the heck of it the PH using the Milwaukee Controller prob i just got from a member and it said 8.2. So either the apex prob at 8.71 is off or that..

Quit playing games and set up some biopellets!!!

I still do a weekly 25% with biopellets. Not to remove no3 or po4, but because my corals fluff up when I do a water change! Even With the ca reactor tuned in, my ca is right at 420, alk at 3.5mg/l, I still do the change.

The salt has trace elements that the reactor does not replenish fast enough(I'm guessing).

Plus, doing a water change removes dissolved organics that your skimmer misses.

waiting on the darn media.. i tried to price match a place at marine depot, but they said it was like an "auction" site, so i had to email back and forth to get everything straight..

hope to get it by sat..

algae is getting better
have not fed coral food

dosed 1.2ml vodka
15ml vinegar

Those levels look pretty good too me. Maintain them until your reactor media gets here. When setting it up, if you haven't set one up before, refer to the sticky that Dave made about ca reactors in reef discussion.

did a small water change.
siphoned out all detrious in both sides of frag tank (~12g) and out of DT (~10g)

changed out GFO and put back a bit more (3/4 cup). also used new filter canister with more fine mesh/filter thing. seemed to bubble a bit more at first.

will test tom morn..

cal media, etc will not be here til maybe wed.. grrr

lost a few space monsters and 1 sps' tips look a bit weird. like not any polyps and a bit of stringy stuff coming out..
