I bought this sometime ago from a LFS and was sold it to be safe.

I don't see it all that much and when I was feeding my scoly and nem a piece of silver side and then I cleaned up the mp40, so i was stirring up settled detritus and it showed up.

I quickly removed it, snapped a few pictures and put it in a container with lid and vents and put in my sump.

Now is this thing reef safe? I have had a few wrasses that I bought and hid and they never surfaced.. this was about 3-4 months ago. Maybe longer.

Edit: well, looks like the link failed soo i can't edit, which is dumb, so just click on it

I'm not a snail guy, but here is the proper link...

Edit: Its not a video, i'm not sure why it shows up that way

I put up two separate links...

Edit: Good that worked... must of been something with the way it copied

Looks like a stomatella to me, albeit a more ornate one than I typically see.

I have it in a container seperated from the DT as I am curious as this is why all my wrasses have disappeared too.

i am thinking putting it in the fuge or skimmer section to clean up the nasty stuff covering the bottom.

Yeah I can see where it might be a cowrie - the way it's sitting in the photo it's kind of twisted up a bit. Does its mantle come right out and cover the shell over sometimes? If so, then it's a cowrie. There are lots of different kinds - some good, not so good.

You said you bought it... what was it sold to you as?

When I first saw the markings on the shell, my first thought was cone snail, but from the pic, the shape didn't match up right - but that's a possibility too. If it's a cone snail, it's dangerous - to you. Highly venomous.

Does it have a "snorkel"? (a proboscis) If it's got a rigid one, it can spear and inject venom. Not cool. Not safe either.

Just got home and looked at it, party of it covers the front portion of the shell where its head is. It also, has a snorkel. When I took the pic it was laying on its shell, was not happy. It's soft and stretches. Has a spear looking front that looks good for going through the sand. It is still separated from anything living.

Hmmm... that sounds like a cone snail. Try googling that term and see if anything you find resembles what you have.

Cones are dangerous and predatory and can harm YOU.

I don't think I can recall ever seeing a cowrie with a proboscis.

mm ok. i will get some better pictures to confirm but for now its just chilling.. now if it is bad, can i just keep it in the fuge or the skimmer area to eat all the nasty stuff? or will it?

Edit: o, also, it was sold to me as a olive snail.. about $6.00 worth..

Edit: cone snail shells are cone shaped right? if so, this shell it like a cylinder with like a point at one end.

i'll be getting better pics when my battery charges up good.

This doesn't look like a cone snail to me... but (not to hi-jack the thread) check these videos out of cone snails.. they are nasty little buggers! I never heard of em till i read this thread
