What's the deal with Salinity?

I've used three buckets full of salinity, and the only thing i've noticed differently from other salts is that it turns my brute trash can brown in time. Some kind of film that washes off pretty easy.

I've never had problems mixing it, even with winter room temperature water. That's probably around 70F. I set it up before I go to bed, and in the morning it's clear and dissolved.

With Reef Salt, I just fill a bucket, pour the salt in, wait 30 mins.. completely dissolved..

My water is not heated..whatever temp it is in the mixing brute.

For 4 years I've tried h&w marine, tropic marine, tropic marine reef,reef crystals, salinity, seachem reef I believe it is/was called. I experienced absolutely nothing different from any of them. The levels were a little different in some of them but nothing of any significance. One thing I did on all of them was mix the entire container at once at the tank temp and I let them all sit for a week prior to adding them to the system.

The Salinity<u></u></em> mixed just as well as the rest for me . So I now use Instant Ocean and have for almost two years at half to one third the price of the other salts. No one has given me a logical reason to switch.

Dave, I think you might be confusing this product. Seachem Salinity hasn't been out for less than a year or so. So, if youve been using IO for 2 1/2, you havent tried salinity. Maybe Im not understanding what youre saying.

it may have been out longer than a year.. but it was RARE that you could find it at any of the LFS until around March or so..

mixing salinity has never been a problem and the plus side to salinity is you use less salt to achieve .21 than other salts. also the bucket portion is larger although you do pay more for that but I have found I purchase less salt than I did using seachem or instant ocean

I think a regular bucket of salinity comes down to $0.35 per gallon (when mixed with water).

Primarily using IO for 2.5 with reefcrystals and salinity tried in the mix with the rest prior to that 2.5. Started the tank on HW marine then went with tropic marine. I personally never experienced any difference in any of them. I use a 50 gallon mix per week so I go through a lot of it.

i'll be needing some more in the next few months actually. i am a huge fan of, though I have noticed the 200 gallons doesnt really feel like 200g of mixed water.. but that is just me.. i like it more than the Reef Crystals I was using. I dont have to dose as much as often as I used to AND my corals are beautiful and for once growing rather than just living.


i dont think i'll will change unless something else comes out that looks more promising.

for mixing, i have a heater set on high and pour the water in and let it heat up for a day and then put about 10 cups of salt ( 30+ gallon trash can for my mixing bin) then I let it sit a day or two and have the quietone 2200 i believe that au01st (changed his name?) gave me cuz it wasnt working.. i've been on cruise since

I used to use Reef Crystals and loved it, got great growth with my corals. Decided to try out a different kind of salt this time around just for the hell of it.. can't remember what its called but it comes in a black bucket.. I think its brightwell. Also works great.

as for mixing, I fill up with water first, then dump in my salt. I let it mix until I get around to doing a water change usually about 2-4 days. Water is always clear with a very small amount of white particle at the bottom (20 or so granules) I ignore that and pump in to my sump.

How much less would you say you have to dose,time and quantity wise.

I used one bucket shortly after it was available and experienced nothing different than with the others. It mixed with very well without visible residue.
