So,

hooked the kalk stirrer up last night - and forgot to unplug the ATO, sure enough it kicked in and dumped a good half gallon of kalk sludge in my SPS frag tank.
pH shot up to like 9.9 and even after a 30gal waterchange on a 100gal system stays at 8.9.
Needless to say - I have about 50% casualties...

Life sucks right now

Geeez Robb.....have you checked your back to see if there is a target painted on it?

I know this advice is late, but I have my RKL SL1 ph probe hooked up to act as an in-tank pH monitor, and it also controls power to my ATO and Kalk stirrer. If the tank pH goes above 8.5 the controller cuts power to the Osmolator and the Nilsen as a redundant backup for this type of situation. I did this after I had a similar, but not nearly as bad, situation a while back.

man im sorry you just cant catch a break of this sps thing. i have used many things to help maintain my reef and found doing nothing to it except for water change's is when it's the happiest. hope everything works out for you for you bud.

Been there done that... it was a game changer for me though... The pain ran so deep that I abandoned the thought of replacing the SPS, and went on to LPS. After I trashed the kalk stirrer, well actually, I just sat it to the side. To this day it still sits in the corner. Don't let this incident discourage you like it did me. Just take it as a lesson learned and strive to make your system more fail safe. With all the SPS growers on this board, I'm sure there are a few out there who will be willing to donate a frag or two to get you back on your feet. In the meantime... just keep pushing forward with the hobby... Happy Reefing!!

I definitely would be happy to go on a clipping spree for you Robb. I remember when I didn't even know you well, and several of us that had bought on the FS forum from a guy met at the old SWC location to pick up our stuff. I bought a stand and canopy that was way too big for me to get unloaded myself, and you selflessly drove about 45 miles out of your way to follow me home and helped me unload this huge cabinet at my house and carry it around to my basement. That shows your true character, and I was very impressed.

Just LMK when you want to, and I'll get you set up with a bunch of frags from my corals.
Dave

In regards to the comment below..... That's good stuff.
Good looking out Dave..

I've got a few things you could have as well....and can easily frag you a few of the colonies........not the nicest stuff like you had...(Oregon tort and the like)....but youre welcome to everything in my tank....but ya still gotta come see it....

we've all (well, I would imagine) have made dumb mistakes by not hooking this back up, turning this off, checking that..............I know it sucks, but it coulds be worst. Really.

I'm so sorry Robb..We have all made mistakes especially when there is alot going on..I know for one I get distracted all the time & flood the house occassionally. You are welcome to anything in my tank. We can clip a little bit of everything I have if there is anything you like in there :) Things will get better soon! It cant rain all the time..so keep your chin up ;)

Oh man! This a WEEK after your other problem which I'm sure everything is still recovering from!! Man, that's gotta suck. I feel for you.. Hopefully things calm down a bit and you can regroup and rebuild what you've lost.

Don't you have an RKE? Is there something you could setup to avoid this in the future??

Sorry to hear man. Let me know if you need anything. Also if you want frags of those we cut the other day let me know when you are ready, and they are yours.

That really sucks, Robb. Sorry about your loss. I can't even remember how many disasters I've had with my tanks in the past. All you can do is learn frm your mistakes and pick up where you left off. Good luck with your recovery.
