Yeah, then you realize you want to persue tech diving and have to sell all your rec diving gear and then just sign your life away for the tech diving gear.

My wife and I got certified on a cruise ship several years ago. It was thru PADI.
We were mailed a work book and DVD. We did all of the class work prior to going on the cruise.
When we underway we did all of our poolwork and when we made port we did our check out dives. A exam was given at the end and we were certified. This worked for us since we were already booked for the cruise. We had a great time and our instuctor was awesome. It was on Royal Caribbean. I did not think at anytime that we received any less training than what we would have be given in a traditional course.

Pretty sure that is a RESORT certification...good for X days and to a depth of 40 feet..... you take that to a place to get fully certified within that time frame and get a discount.

that was a full open water certification R.C. used to be affiliated with SSI but switched to PADI a few years ago Norwegian Cruise lines and others have jumped onboard with scuba certification as it has turned quite a few $ for them. Had a student who went on to become an instructor take a job with Norwegian as an onboard instructor was having a blast living in an 10x10 room with another person in the bowels of the ship diving all over the caribbean

total package with mask, fins, booties, snorkle, books and open water trip figure somewhere around $1000 - $1200 depending on where you do your open water dives. if you find someone or a store that will handle the open water portion in a local lake you might get by for $800.

I got certified for $225.00 we went to Pelham Alabama and i finishe up at lake Lanier. I probably have $400.00 in gear and i have all that i need.

PDIC as an apprentice diver when I was 14..

this sounds alot more like it, ive looked around and looks like i can get used equipment and a new regulator for something like this, maybe alittle more. but i called a shop about getting certified and they told me $350. and it looks like they do their dives in a rock quarry up in north ga

the guys who have 2k+ in equipment, where does it all go? is majority of it wetsuit? i havent priced those yet, but you can find some great deals on regulators and computers on ebay

Word of warning. Quarry's can be freaking cold. Make sure you either have a wesuit or that one will be available for rent.

Wetsuit is not where the prices go. It all goes to the BCD, regulator and computers. Also, I wouldn't buy any regulators off ebay. Make sure it is namebrand. I heard there was some knock off a while back. Thats the most important part of the equipment.

Edit:

I don't think a wetsuit will be enough protection. I ended up gettting certified in dry suit because I was doing my open water over the winter in preparation for the summer divings.

It's a name brand thing with the gear i think. A guy i dove with last year has a atomic regulator ( expensive one) i got a sea elite (cheap one) and there was a little difference but not enough for me to fork out the extra money. Gorilla is right quarrys do get cold.

my wife and I sdi
atomic t1 regs fins mask snorkel octo atomic z reg
mares dragon bcd she uses the mares kala mares puck computers

Some of that equipment (reg, bcd) is your lifeline. Would hate to run into a problem with it, especially on a wreck or below 40' or more.
If you are going to buy used...http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/scuba-marketplace/">http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/scuba-marketplace/</a>
Used = out of warranty IMO, so buyer beware. I don't think I would buy a heart on eBay, not that you can anymore.
