Why is my tank so cloudy??

Glad you're getting it worked out Gary. If the need comes up I'm currently have 25 gallons of Salinity made up myself. You're welcome to it if the need comes up.

Guess I'm glad I have crushed coral as my substrate in my 95 gallon with my Vortech.

Yeah!! Good new is the vortech isn't moving the sand, just the detritus on the sandbed and rock. I haven't vaccumed in about 3 weeks so I guess I had it coming!

I'm glad I didn't try to dose anything, I try not to chase numbers so the wait and see works. Good news is I'm dialing in my new skimmer and it pulled out a half gallon of wet skim and the ato replaced it with fresh water so (pending a test) the alk and calcium are a lil more balanced - I can tell big time - very clear water end to end.

Thanks guys

Oil fan - I think I'm good til this weekend thanks for the offer. I'd love for you to come by and check out my new plumbing and toys - 2nd set of eyes always helps :)

I mixed up water using salt that had got hard and was old and got cloudy water last week I let it mix for 3 days .I figure the salt was bad or something. I noticed it before doing a water change. Has anny one used salt that has hardened up before?

I havent - what kind of salt was it - I dont think the texture matters so much as long as you dissolve it really well. what matters more is the alk/CA in that salt, maybe what happened to me happened to you - i have enough to worry about but now i guess i have to test my fresh salted water before i put it in - high alk on my salinity..

Well you needn't have thrown away the Seachem MG kit. I don't use the alk tests they come with, but the MG test is useful and accurate, and has a long shelf life. You can always test the reference solution to make sure it's still accurate, and/or call Seachem with the lot number to confirm that. Waste of a $49 test kit by throwing it away :-/

6 meq/L is the upper end of what Seachem recommends... they recommend 4-6 meq/L (and yes, I know that contradicts what RHF recommends, but it actually jives with what Tullock says, so it depends who you are a disciple of...)

It doesn't match with your dKH reading but dKH is only carbonate hardness, and the Seachem test tests total alkalinity (carbonate, borate and hydroxide combined).

Since you've concluded that it's particulate... a filter sock and perhaps some Clarity if you haven't already...

The kit was used, free and was missing parts (I was using the same syringe for both alk and mag titrants - after a tapwater rinse) i didnt put much stock into the results of the seachem alk as user error is always a factor. Ive got socks on any avail point - water is much clearer this AM, cant wait to see it when i get home. now if i could just get my UV ready i will be in good shape - gonna tear it out and try to epoxy all the fittings where its been leaking.

unfortunately the leaks are coming from the factory seals and the bushings..

Is that a threaded seal? I can't quite tell.

And I can come over on Thursday after work if you like. Tomorrow's no good as I'm playing hockey tomorrow night.
