Will a 1/4 HP chiller work on my tank?

How do you not understand what Skirz said? It isn't the same for chillers as it is for heaters....I'm sure someone who works in the hobby and works for a high end manufacture as himself would not tell you to run a chiller that wouldn't be right for your tank...

That chiller may require more flow to be effective, which may turn his tank into a whirlpool depending how it was plumbed.

i understand what he is saying guy.. But if for some reason i have a power outage and my tank raises or drops 5 Degrees and then i get power that chiller will raise the temp to fast.... So it works just like a heater... Thats how i lost my livestock in my smaller tank.. Someone said a 300w heater would be fine. power out for a hour and it was cold. power on it raised the tank so fast it cracked and killed everything. This chiller is Rated for 170 gallons which it can do a +- 10 Deg


On 100g its 20-+

A chiller will not raise your temperature...

Unless a chiller fails, which is rare but does happen. The chiller will turn off when it reaches the temp that you program it too. I had a 1/4 on my solana 34g system and never once had a problem. It never chilled the water too low or raised the heat as you are suggesting.

He didn't say it would raise the temp over what it is set at... It will raise it too fast. Read what he wrote...

How does a chiller raise temp in a tank....the whole point behind a chiller is to lower the temp...

Most chillers have a built in thermostat and controller. With the controller you set the desired temp that you would allow the tank to always be at. After that most controllers only allow 2-3 degrees of swing. Mine is 2 degrees. This is for the very reason you fear. It wont allow the temp to get too high then chill it down very low either. This way you won't kill anything. At least this is how my chiller and most new age chillers are. You can also get a ranco heater temp controller and set it that way as well and be sure you won't kill anything.

Make sure it has a set ramp rate. I don't know if Ranco have that or not. I think it's just a set point.
