would a yellow tang kill a peppermint shrimp?

I had 2 peppermint shrimp. Now Ive only got 1. The only thing ive added was a yellow tang. Would it have killed it??

Maybe.... BUT...

Peppermint shrimp have a tendency to stay out of sight.

I have seen a small yellow tang go after a med size peppermint shrimp and kill and eat it. If you put in anymore get the largest you can find and turn the lights out so he can find a place in the rocks, mine comes out at night while the bigger fish sleep.

I typically over feed also, twice per day, a good bit at a time. My peppermints never stayed out of sight, especially when Im feeding the tank. They are always out in the open scavenging for what ever hits the bottom (shrimp, pellets). They would also "climb" on to my hands when I put them in the tank. One is still climbing on my hands and eating in the open. I havent seen the other one in about 4 days or so. Which would be about 3 days after I put the tang in.

Likely hiding. Wait a week and see if it is still missing.

I've had several people report to me over the years, that they witnessed sailfin tangs eating shrimp (cleaners & peppermints) - saw it happen with their own eyes.

While that, IMO is rare, it's possible.

But it's just as likely that the shrimp is hiding, either post-molt, or just because.

they typically molt within a couple days of each other. I saw the molts in the tank a few days before I noticed him "missing". Still no sign of him, the other is still out and about...

Maybe the tang would have gotten to him when, or right after he molted?
