180 Stand Question...

So a few of you know I got a great deal on a new 180g tank. The catch is, it has a chip on the corner, and the stand it came with was not meant for this tank. I took some pictures of it last night to see if anyone had ideas on modifying it. If not, I can sell or trade it. A Google search brought back ridiculous prices on it though! $1248?!?

I was thinking maybe I could carriage bolt two 4x4s and then add in a 2x4 frame. The depth of the tank is 24 inches and the depth of the stand is 19.5.

Again, if need be, I can sell this and buy or build another stand. I'm not in a super hurry.

You can scab on a larger frame but the tank will not be on the new frame unless you make it a lil&#8217;bit larger and you need to extend the support legs down to the bottom boards. Yea that is a little high for that particular stand for sure. Do you have a pocket hole jig?

This is a good deal.

Take the back 3 verticals and the back horizontal pcs off. Have plywood ripped to the additional width + 6" and screw it to the inside of the stand. Fill in the voids on each end and on the bottom with smaller rips then replace the back pcs and the end trim.

Two questions:

1. Am I screwing the new plywood onto the 2x4 "ledge"?

2. When you say "voids", I'm not sure what you mean exactly.

I'll see if I can sketch up what I THINK you're telling me to do and post it here. The other option would be to build a bombproof frame and then just screw on the "skin".

Edit: Pocket hole jig, no. I'm guessing that's how I'm supposed to screw in the plywood?

Here's what we have so far! Good or bad, it was really tough to get those pieces off!

now you need 2 plywood rips 4.5 wide x the height of the stand and 2 more rips +/-12" wide x the height of the stand-3/4"

Does this help? No 2x4 garbage just plywood rips. The red are the 4.5" and the white are the sister pcs used to attach the red since they overlap the inside of the stand. When you get this far replace everything you removed.

Makes complete sense now! So just wood screw the "white" pieces right onto the "red" and the stand, correct? Should I glue as well?

Most definitely! Grouper, would there be any problem having the bottom "white" piece in two sections across? I have enough wood in the garage for that. Nice cabinet grade 3/4" oak.

I would use some Elmers wood glue as well. That will give more bonding power than screws. Screws hold it together while the glue sets up.

You should be fine because it really supports no weight and will rest on the flat floor.

Agreed with Rich. 3/4 oak ply in two pieces will be fine.

at HD you can get a 3/4 sheet for like 25.00 it's not oak but if you paint it you will never know
