That really doesn't keep track or care of the names or even types of corals I keep? I have half a dozen zoanthids which I have no idea the name of them. And a few unidentified SPS. I just never really cared, I buy what looks good (but I do make sure my tank can support the species, I just forget about it after that).

Most of the time. I still have quite a few things in the tank that I have not idea, other than "zoa" "some sps" and "some other sps" lol...

On occasion I remember the names, such as my Rastas, but other than that, I could care less. Just whatever looks good or whatever the wife tells me to buy...

What's a zoanthid? What's an SPS?

I remember all the names. There is the whoziwhatsit, the thingamabob, the gozonda and the gozinda.

I'm 50/50 with names, if i remember what there called then I use it if not I just make it up. Oh the green sps at the top (thats a intergalactic green face melter) :)

the fun part is when you HAVE to make up a name. I have some fire and ice on a rock with (whammin watermelon?) green/orange zoas, and right where they meet there are fire and ice with bright green and fluorescent orange centers. I have never seen a zoa like them!

I keep a log of evevrything I add to specfic tank...where I bought it and from whom with phone numbers to contact that person if there is a need to. This includes fish, coral and inverts. I do this with a microsoft spreadsheet. I know sounds totally nerdy...lol

Do you sell frags from your tank? If so how do you price them?

I have always enjoyed being able to recall the scientific name as well as the common name when showing my tank off to new people. It makes me look like I know what I'm doing and sounds better than saying I really don't know when asked about a certain type of coral.

It doesn't matter if your name-coral collector or you just buy no name corals, as long as you enjoy your tank and it's inhabitants then it doesn't matter. But I like to know names so that if I see a piece at the LFS that is underpriced because they didn't know what it is I can scoop it up for a killer price =) Also for trading/selling it helps to know the names. I also like to know names so that I can call in to a shop and ask for specific coral if I happen to be looking for that specific named coral. In the end the names don't really matter though.

Edit:

It def sounds nerdy, but that probably comes in handy very often. Kudos for being able to detail and log all that information. I log all my water parameters and couldn't do it any other way.

I'm horrible with names. I'd love to be able to identify each one with its common name, if for no other reason than value. I'd hate to find out I let go of something rare because I got tired of seeing it.

I have 5,6,7 corals that I remember specifically, after that I am lost....

Maybe take a picture of it when you first get it and put the name and price you paid for it. Then you can always reefer back to it.

I use the name game when buying corals if I am looking for a specific growth pattern, color, or species. It really only depends on what you want. Some people don't mind buying that "mystery" coral. Some people only want to buy something that has expectations tied to the name.

I do a little of both. I see some things that look awesome! If they have a name, I try to find a way to buy a frag with expectations that it will grow into the colony that I want. Sometimes buying unnamed mystery corals can be more rewarding.

Me Jeff I definitely second that. I have some corals I barely know what are. Much less some crazy name. IMO which usually just jacks the price up and I won't go there. But no, I think alot of us could care less and just enjoy the true beauty in gods awesome creations.
