I am going to mount some retro parabolic reflectors with 250 MH and 2 VHO tubes.

If I build a frame and suspend it the frame and lights will be smack dab in the middle of the doors aloowing no room to work in the tank.

If I mount the lights directly to the top of the canopy they will be approx 8" off the water.

Thoughts?

You could put in some rails to push the lights out the back of the canopy if that's a possiblity when you need to work in there. You could also suspend it in the canopy using chains and cinch them up when you need to work in there. I use a yo-yo on my pendants so I can pull them up and away from the tank when its time to work on it.

That being said... I would just mount the halides directly to the top of the canopy as 8" is within normal parameters for halide positioning I would think. Reflector type would be a factor for me in deciding how high to keep a light. I kept mine 18 inches off the water... but I was using those large lumenbrights.
