Did you consider removing the skinmer to see what that did to your nitrates?

I'm less concerned with removing NO3 and more concerned with the oxygenation / CO2 dispersal that a skimmer helps with .

what i mean is.. .i, personally, don't consider a good skimmer to be dispensable equipment
