Best varnish type for refinished stand?

I'm refinishing a stand and canopy for a 125 gallon. It will be stained (brown mahogany or something like that). It's a mix of solid wood (not sure what kind-- light grained, not oak) and birch veneer plywood. I'm just wondering what kind of varnish, polyurethane or whatever stands up best to the inevitable occasional saltwater drips and spills that are going to happen. Any advice would be helpful.

If you are going to brush the finish on then I would go with a spar varnish or a polyurethane.

Thanks. I am planning to brush it on, so I'll probably just go with polyurethane.
