I suppose giving John a sack of blue balls is not really the nicest thing I could do to repay him huh...

Yes... the pun was intended, but you already knew that.

At the risk of being a "post parrot" I was told many times not to mess with them because they tend to be "nitrate factories" but I can give you a whole sack of blue balls if you would like. Least I can do for that beautiful Rainbow Monti I got in the raffle the other night!
Don't sweat it. I actually started this thread as a joke to Ansley. I looked at the board today and out of the posts I could see on my screen 11 were classifieds. I just wanted to see people talking about reefs instead of it looking like craigslist . By the way thats a superman monti not a rainbow so its even better.

Yeah, I figured you knew better than to ask a question about bio balls. I was about to send a PM asking that, then I got all kinds of distracted showing HoneyB ricks post. But none the less.. If you want some blue balls I'm your man! :lol2:

well if you want to give me blue balls I'll take them. There are uses for them such as hospital tanks, and I have abot 30g of them in my beed filter on my pond.

Humm.. I didnt think about using them on a hospital. When I set mine up I was just going to use an HOB on a 20 or so bare bottom and a little LR, but maybe a dead coral or 2 for decoration.

Yep, rocks are not good in a hospital tank when your treating with meds. Properly maintained bioballs are a better choice IMHO for that application. I don't really use them in my display but know plenty of successful tanks that do.

I also use them in my pond. We have a lot of different views when it comes to keeping ponds as apposed to reefs. I have a bead filter (converted pool sand filter) and I would never clean them in it. Just back-flush twice a week.

A large HOB filter is best for a QT tank in my opinion for price used and function.
Bioballs to have to be cleaned, but I have witnessed and read that cleaning these in an older established tank to much can also cause problems by again throwing biological filtration causing irratic numbers. The more natural the better. Rock rubble
