Chapter 1: IM Nuvo40

I resealed a freshwater tank using the method @bhodges82 described except I only resealed the one side and not the bottom seal as well (I didn't know any better) and it held water for another 8 years before I sold it. It's not worth losing sleep over. If you are concerned then sell it and get something else. Was the tank full of water and running when you bought it? Regardless, after you clean the tank up, I would fill it with fresh water, observe the seals, and leak test it for a couple of days.

Thanks, that seems to be the RODI of choice.
Just ordered from BRS and 30 lbs of dry rock from Aquacave

Tank is full of water and humming along...
I played with the light a bit but will probably leave it off while the tank cycles.
I put carbon in the aqua gadget. Water temp is slowly rising.
I put in some expired API marine quick start. We’ll see if it does anything.

I’ve been eyeballing some clownfish online but will probably check LFS for some as well.

Yes that’s what I bought. I told them it was for a Nuvo40 and they sent me the pieces.
They were super nice and called me to tell me the rock was on back order (only a couple of days). I think they try to give you what you are looking for but since I had no experience, I just gave them the size of my tank.

My daughter and I stopped by Atlanta Aquarium and stared at a million clownfish for an hour.
I kind of have an idea of what clownfish go for but it’s hard for me to distinguish some of the varieties.
We found a cool Gladiator (Davinci) clown one the front tank. And then walked around and found a second on in one of the rear tanks.

The smart side of my brain told me to buy the regular clowns which were on sale 2/$15. But the other side told me that I didn’t want to be stuck with 2 regular clowns even though I was just starting.

Plus I didn’t want to look like a wuss in front of my daughter. So I just spent $80 on 2 tiny fish.

So how often do clownfish commit suicide? They weren't in a covered tank at the LFS...should I cover my tank?
Do you guys cover your rimless tanks? It kind of looks ugly with a cover.

I only cover my tank for wrasses. Every fish can potentially jump of course but I've never had a clownfish go carpet surfing. Plus when they get startled, they head for the rocks.

Well all fish can jump. My two original clowns have never jumped. But I added a new one about two weeks ago that came with a Bubble tip and she has jumped twice...but that has only happened when I had my hand in the water. I think she went for a strike at my hand and missed and ended up on the floor. When I had a Nuvo 40 I made my own screen bc I had a goby jump and die.

That's cool regarding the rock - thank you for the feedback!

Regarding the clowns... mine haven't tried to jump - like others have said, they usually go for the rocks. The thing I would look out for is fighting. They seem to be very similar in size, and appear to both be males. But you'll probably be fine. And they are gorgeous! Definitely worth the $80, especially if the girl likes them. Money well spent!

Thanks again,

Up in Chicago, most of our fish tanks were covered, but we had a few that weren’t. we would cycle clownfish in and out of them as they were sold. In those tanks, I’ve only had 2 clowns jump. Thankfully, both were saved. And the second clown that jumped, he actually did it several times, the exact same clown, and just got lucky every time. But as pointed out already, clowns generally aren’t jumpers.

Also, you made a good call getting the Davinci’s if they makes you happier. Assuming you care for them well, they’ll live for 10-20 years each.

I put the cover on the tank. Better safe, and a little ugly, than sorry.

So I noticed that one of the clowns has a gimpy dorsal fin. Kind of a bummer but I guess it is what it is now...

I thought that all baby clowns were male initially and then the dominant one becomes a female?

Yes... but the males establish a pecking order, based on size. If two are very similar in size, they will fight. If/until the largest/dominant one turns female (lots of variables there), you might just keep an eye on them. But again, I'm probably just typing because I like the sound the keys make xD

Thanks...looks like the smaller one is more dominant at this point. Maybe the larger one feels a bit inferior due to its gimpy dorsal fin, lol.
