The trainwreck of my tanks continues...

I added glass lids to my 75gal this weekend and the lion went down just shy of two days ago.

water params checked out - a tad high on the ph.

the skimmer had gone nuts for a couple days before he died.

a kole tang had died the week before.

water temperature had risen (i've since put my light on risers and it has returned to normal.

the whole system was closed with zero or near zero gas exchange.

i've ruled out the inverts and longnose hawk... they're innocent.

any theories?

Oxygen? That nearly cost me my Naso. Tangs, supposedly, require highly oxyginated (sp?) water. Not sure about the lion.

What are you using for a return pump? Make sure it's not clogged.

Aren't you supposed to have gas exchange over the water? If you have a glass top, that could prevent that...

I'm trying to remember if I put the glass lids on before or after the tang went down.

I opened the lid on my sump and the skimmer has calmed down.

is there a way to oxygenate the water and still keep the lids closed?

I would say oxygen.

You can oxygenate via your sump if it's large enough. And/or, keep a gap on the lids.

how much of a gap?
I'm considering wrasses since there's not a lion there to eat them.

then again, swc had this tiny black volitan...

start a new thread with something about wrasses. Reefers that have them can tell you what they put on the top of their tank. I would think some kind of mesh, but not sure what would look good and do the job.

oxygen.

I've heard of "airstones" before... what are they, and would they be a viable option?
