I'm not sure - I have it at the bottom of a baffle so water is forced to flow through it. From what I've read, a reactor isn't essential, and it appears to be working for me as my nitrates are near undetectable. I don't even have to clean my glass more than once every 2 weeks.

so just chuck it in the flow and let it do it's thing? if it killed all your nitrate woes, i may get that next.
 
Ya - I've seen pretty drastic results actually. My nitrates were routinely in the 30-40 range and I couldn't seem to get them down. I put a bag of matrix in the flow and about 4-6 weeks later, nitrates are gone. I dosed stability per the instructions to give the matrix a "boost"
