So after doing a water change today I noticed a aaa battery that my room mates one year old must have slipped in had fallen under my circulation pump. I don't have any inverts other than hermits that I assume I'll loose...other than another w/c which is in the works, what else should I do to mitigate damage/losses. The circ pump has a sediment filter, so it picked up a lot of fluff, but other than copper leaching in...?

I'm at a loss as to what to expect.

There's probably not any copper in it, however there can be zinc, zinc or aluminum chloride and may leech of some ammonia, maybe someone else will chime In on a good way to remove those elements but I'd try running some carbon and some water changes and just monitor water quality.

Make it a big water change. If you're worried about heavy metals, cuprisorb should take care of it. Purigen for all the other nasties that might have got in. I'll bet the hermits are fine, they're pretty tough.

Pull it out, throw it away and move on. Unless you've seen something "off" happening with your tank, I wouldn't do anything different. Doing large water changes can upset things much worse than just leaving it as is.

Pretty sound advice. That and don't use the water that had the battery in it ;-)

I'm also a big fan of Poly Filters as well, I like that you can see what color the filter is and know what it is pulling out.

I'll pick up some poly filters and swap out my generic filter floss. I replaced my carbon and am running my w/c setup though a vinegar bath for a few hours.

Thanks for the advice, I feel a lot better.
