Design for 150G Acrylic

LOL, I know! 6 months from when when I started designing things, and moving ever so slowly.

This isn't even a proper build thread, not yet at least.

I have my living room littered with stuff I need to clear out, and THEN the real work of home improvement begins:

Replacing the flooring. Patching the drywall holes (a few). Scraping off the popcorn ceiling. Painting the walls... Painting the ceiling.

Thinking about using this layout for the primary returns.


Up against the interior rear wall, there's a Tee which directs the flow downward, and forwards to where a 3/4" flex nozzle will go.

Towards the lower fronts, the elbow at the ends will also have 3/4" flex nozzles pointing upwards.


The four tees in the middle will probably have something like an Oceans Motions Revolutions nozzle (x 4), the upside-down variation of Version 14, with <span style="color: #333333">1" / 3 nozzles at 15°, 30°, 45°.</span>

Minor revision - reduced the horizontal runs down to 2 instead of 4, for two OM Revolutions nozzles.

Gave the outputs a 6" riser, though I may shorten that in reality - the Revolutions nozzles will go on top of those short 6" riser tubes, facing up.


I have two of the Revolutions nozzles on order, each with 15, 30, 45 degree nozzles that will rotate around 360 degrees.

Looks more like a rocket launcher than an UV... it's HUGE!
 
Looking good. That,s going to be a lot of plumbing. Glad to see you taking your time with it. There's so much in that 'little' space.
 
Thanks to some suggestions, I've re-worked the UV plumbing layout some to be able to incorporate a pitot-style vertical flow meter, which seems to be the least expensive option.

All flow meters require a certain length of straight pipe before and after the meter, which makes plumbing difficult in short pipe runs.


The flow meter style I'm looking at is from Blue-White Industries, the U-300 version for 1.5" PVC pipe.

It mounts vertically, on the side of the pipe, and is attached with clamps.

This meter has two different versions, a low-flow measuring 9-30 GPM, and a high-flow version measuring 20-100 GPM.


The UV requires 450-600 GPH (7.5 - 10 GPM) for Protozoa, and 2700 - 3600 GPH (45 - 60 GPM) for algae and bacteria.

The low-flow meter is right at the upper end of the range for killing protozoa, but the high-flow meter is right in the middle for algae & bacteria.

The Dart / Snapper hybrid pump I got can do 750-4300 GPH in Dart mode, and 300-2600 GPH in Snapper mode.


I could probably get both the high-flow and low-flow meters, and swap them out if/when I need to go to high/low flow rates.


Anyway, here's a picture of the revised layout.

The green plumbing are the drain lines - they'll probably be partly FlexPVC down to the sump.

The purple lines are the 4 return lines coming off of the 4-way.

Above the right side of the UV (which is the outlet), there's an extended length of vertical pipe that goes up and loops down.

That vertical pipe is where the flow meter is attached (the teal vertical block).

The pipe is longer because the flow meter needs at least 15" before it, and 6" after in order to function properly.

Might be slightly longer once I put valves/unions in the mix.

I forget the drum model number, but it's the diagonally opposed one - ports 1 & 3, then 2 & 4.

I also have some Revolutions nozzles on order, but I ordered them over a month ago and I haven't heard anything from them.

A little concerned about that...

this is the flow meters we use at work on our large DI systems. The website says 138.00. i might be able to get you a better price. this one has 1" threads

Thanks for the suggestion - I had also been looking at PVC in-line flow meters, but to get one that does the range of 7.5 GPM up to 50+ GPM it would cost like $460.
 
Any details on how you mounted your LED's to your plastic canopy? I'm struggling with ideas for mine - 50w led chip on an AMD-type processor heatsink/fan combo similar to yours. Not sure how to mount them in a wood canopy.

I'm still in the process of building it (aren't I always...), but this is what I'm doing:


The heatsinks will be drilled and tapped for screws, with 1/2" aluminum bars mounted on the side of the heatsink.

The heatsink / LED / optics go inside an acrylic box - it's being custom made by MRC for me, next week.

The box will be supported by an aluminum frame, made of 1" L-angle aluminum.

And finally, the assembly will be mounted to the inside of the canopy side walls.

I plan to drill some holes in the canopy sides and insert some thread inserts, which will hold the weight.
