Can any one tell me the best way to go about diving in the GA aquarium. I have heard you can volunteer for a while then you MAY get to dive or pay like $300 to do it. Is there any other options?

ask Todd (washowi) or Steve Shindell- (SShindell) they both dive the GA aq. pretty regularily. I think there is a program where you have to volunteer for lke year and get physicals, etc.--but they know the details.

There is the Dive program for the public - $290 in Ocean Voyager.

The Dive volunteer program is pretty extensive, and does require yearly physicals, a dive/swim test, and most people are master divers (but this is not a requirement). You have to do a certain number of dives per month, plus other volunteering. You usually have to do a lot of volunteering in other areas before you are selected, and continue it afterward. It is a longterm committment. PM me if you want more details.

Ditto what Steve says...Just got back from diving there today..

Only difference now from when I started is they accept Open Water Certifications now....when I did it, you had to be Rescue or higher..

25 logged dives verifiable....35 hours I believe minimum working the floor before you dive..., Physical that costs $370 I think...and pass a brutal dive test..(at least it was for me).

Pm if you need more info....

or just pay $290 and dive it...

Don't scare him away yet!

It is the same swim test I took to take my older son and other Boy Scouts out on a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota :) I think it is 25 m underwater, 400 m in 12 minutes, and a few other things. If you pace yourself and are in decent shape, it is easy to pass. If an old out of shape man like me can do it, you can. Just do some swimming for a month or two before hand so you realize how far that is, so you don't use up all your energy in the first two laps. It is not a sprint. I think I finished in 8 minutes and was not winded. If you try to burn up the track, you really struggle the last few laps.

If you volunteer dive at the aquarium you also get to dive cold water with the Belugas, learn surface supply, and other pretty cool things..

Yep that's my problem....I am old, out of shape, and had to swim the 400 then do the 25 underwater....I almost drown :) Young guys will have no problem....

I chose the path of no training, drink the night before, and see if I can pass....:) I did......of course...before that, the last time I swam a 400 was in 1979...in the high school swim team.

It's easy....;)

BTW..I did the 400 in 9:30.......Is that a new Olympic record? Phelps better watch out

I know this is an older thread but could someone p.m. me the info on this? It sounds like a great experience.

no need to PM...

just go here and apply on-line

its pritty cool i am a valunteer lol i need to do more hours so i dont have to pay the $60 this time

My g/f got it for my for my B-Day. It was one of the nicest things I have ever done. It seemed like we were only in the water for 5mins. You do a figure 8 around the "Ocean". A whale shark actually brushed up against me. I didnt even feel him. My buddy was next to me and saw it. Also the video camera got it on film. The waiting list is rediculous. But it is worth the money. You get O2 tanks which made it a lot better. It makes you feel like you are scuba diving. I hope everyone gets the chance to do it. I hear there are 5 hammer heads in there now. That should make it exciting!

Exciting is a relative term. When those hammerheads are staring you down, one tends to feel the need to "warm their wetsuit"!

I am glad you enjoyed it. There are three hammerheads in there right now, two males and a female.

We did it (Scuba) this past summer and had a blast. It's a little disconcerting when you're watching the whale sharks and turn around to see that you're within touching distance of the hammerhead. If I were in the open ocean I'd be polluting the water, but in Voyager you just think it's cool!

And where else can you scuba dive with spectators!?
