I was at a random aquarium and saw some squash being eaten by some tangs... Is this normal and does it have any benefits? I have a garden at my house with lots of squash growing in it with no pesticides or anything, is squash a good food source for tangs. I have a gold rim, sailfin and a regal.

It's full of vitamins and antioxidants... we feed our tangs lettuce and garlic supplements. I don't see how it could be a bad thing.

A tang would never encounter squash in the wild. Lettuce is pretty useless too - they can't break down the cellulose so it just "passes through".

Personally I think foods that mimic their natural diet are better choices.

As for garlic, no they wouldn't encounter that either, but it is frequently used as an appetite stimulant and immune booster. It's more of a (natural) medicinal type supplement, and not a staple diet.

I wondered about that. I don't think flake or pellets mimic anyones diet.
