Hair Algae Galore

+1,000,000
Try testing your phates in the AM before the lights turn on. Have you thought about biopellets?
You clearly have a big nutrient problem. I bought a frag that had some HA on it. I scrubbed as much off as I could, but it was in between some dead branches at the base of the colony. Within a week in my tank, the HA withered and died. No nutrients equals no algae....

So if Phosphates are not in the water column why does GFO (btw, I will check if you're on their payroll) work so well? You just pump water over it...

it's saturated in the live rock, living .........argggggg...

OK, bad analogy .....

an ice cube in 33 degree f or 1 C......

it's locked up in the cube, but slowly releases into the water....

Edit: that's why it takes so long to get rid of!!!!

It is irrelevant how it it is introduced if the algae utilizes before it can be extracted. agreed?

if you have a question, ask!

He said he is running gfo so why does he have an algae problem? Your copy and paste skills are amazing.

thanks....in case you didn't notice moroon...I was the one that started that thread....so what the 'ell are you talking about? no copy paste! That was my thread! I'm sorry that I forgot after some umteen years the exact chemical reaction that causes phosphates to bind to organic matter...SO, INSTEAD, I ASKED! and you ridicule me? ...

Why are you calling David a clownfish? He is funny.

My apologies there baby Ralph did not know you were that thin skinned. Although I'm not sure how your post and/or link helps the op with his hair algae problem. I think we all agree with you that phosphates will bind to the substrate and release into the water column over an undetermined amount of time. If we all don't then I implore of you all to do so. Now that we have all agreed to that . How does one prevent the algae from utilizing the phosphates before the other methods including the infamous GFO can do so?

lol...I'm not .....just like making you look more stupid than you look!

:D

It's not his fault. He's a little worried about the Wake Forest game tomorrow.

you have 3 thugs out on suspension? yet you are favored by 50? tough schedule that SEC has for GA...scary..

Please refer to them as UGA moving forward; they smoked a little reefer. Mr. Deadhead, could you pass a drug test right now? And we're favored by 32. If you want to give me 50, I'll take NM State.

Consider the source and it is all understandable .BTW Ralph did you know phosphates will bind to the substrate:eek::eek::eek:

duh! that's the hard part!

it will always be utilized by algae & absorbed by gfo & absorbed by sand and rock.......

The trick is to eventually have it low enough (in an ULNS) that there is no more available...

However, in my case, since my 2 Leopards were ill, I decided that I was not going to attempt this as I was increasing the amount of phates and trates knowingly more than I can remove....So, I went with Algaefix...temporarly, just to insure I can make all leopards fat & happy again!

Hanin,
Sorry the thread went in this direction. At least your algae issue has become humorous!

Speaking of hair algae.....
have you tried any long spined urchins. They'll help mow it down but definitely not a long term fix. If you can get a 100g brute and keep the coral fish in that for a week or two. Go lights out on the tank rock, algaefix, mega water changes etc. Scrub the coral with Ralph's toothbrush in a seperate bucket or bowl of waste water:)

I was thinking like qiut introducing them until the GFO and others could catch up. Kinda like if you don't want to cut your grass as often don't fertilize it.
