I got a Regal tang on Friday...he was spot free. Today I looked at him and he had a good bit of white spots. He is eating good, and swimming well! What should I do? I have also been using Garlic Guard with the seaweed(hasn't really started eating it yet). I will post a pic in a bit. Oh, and none of my other fish have signs(knock on wood).

Turn off the lights and keep your hands out of the tank. Feed like crazy and do W/Cs...he will be ok!

Okay, I just fed them Spirulina frozen food; I will turn out the lights. Can I turn them back on to feed? And I just prepared 5 gallons for a water change(I know, it's not much, I will do more, only have 1 bucket). Should I turn the temperature up? If so, to what? Current temp: 81.1

Edit: Oh, if it is worse tomorrow should I result to Metronidazole?

soak the food he does in in garlic guard. I even have gone so far to feed them straight garlic.... I was shocked when they started eating the garlic.
Just make sure he is eating something that has been soaked in there, for his sake and for the sake of the other fish.

id turn the lights on to feed I guess. Want them to see there is food.
Dont use any chemicals.

Okay, just turned the lights out! I have the moonlights on right now. Should I turn those out too? I will feed again later tonight!

hey buddy,

I have a regal too that got ich within the first few days that I got him. It spread to the yellow tang that I got with him too. I had a flame angel that died a few days ago and he was just in BAAAAD shape with the ich. ever since I took out the flame angel that had the worst and I was feeding like crazy too, the regal is better now and the yellow tang is pretty much free of it too. I don't know much since I am really new to the hobby too, but I was feeding brine shrimp to them and soaking it in vitamins and they were eating it like crazy. I was feeding like 3 times a day. Finally they're eating well. I also got a cleaner wrasse when I got the two tangs and they have been a lot more comfy letting him pick at their parasites. Luckily they're in much better shape. I was really afraid. I think the key is to keep them eating and like the other guy said, keep your hands out of the tank and keep things as serene as possible for them. I didn't cut back on the lights but I think that will probably help them relax too. But my guys won't feed much without the lights on. Just try to keep things as consistent as possible, temp, food, lights, water changes, etc. You should be ok. The regals are really prone to ich. but they will make it if you keep things simple and untouched.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the tips! I just turned out the moonlights; I just want them to go ahead and calm down. I will turn the lights on to feed. If it's worse tomorrow, Im going to my LFS and getting some Metro and focus. The last tank that I had was a 26 gallon and I lost every single fish! I'm not going to let in get bad like last time!

Pick up some PE Mysis...IMO. I would also hold off on the metro and focus for a day or two, if they appear to be better then wait it out. Some folks believe the metro and focus might not be good in a reef tank. I used it with great success but we are all still learning! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Spirulina that I just bought has mysis in it! I think he had a breakout due to stress! My current temp. is: 81.1. Is that okay?

Umm, I believe no but I keep my tank at 76-77. I think the higher the temp, the higher the metabolism, the higher the proliferation of the illness.
Any one else know?

hmmmmm....I once read the higher the temp the faster the ich ran through its cycle. I will keep an eye on him for a while...like I said tomorrow if he is worse, thats when I'm taking fast action.

I still can't see how that fish can possibly have ich...he's been in captivity for several months before you got him.

Just how many spots does he have? 2, 30, can't count because he's covered up? If you are seeing a handful of spots, leave him be, and relax. The more you tinker with things, the more stress you'll cause.

Water change won't do anything if it's not due and your water quality is good and sticking your hands in the tank to do that will only cause more stress, when less is what you want to do now.

If you're that worried, bring him back, I'll take a look and quarantine him. I'm closed Monday but email me as I won't be far away.

Whew, I was hoping you would chime in Jenn. I really want to talk to you sometime soon because I'm about to embark on a tang-tastic endeavor. Thank you for all your help!

John bought the fish from me, so I'm particularly concerned about it. It was traded in, kept in a system that only had a few fish (all the others had also been traded in and had been there for several weeks without incident).

It was clean when it left - I took a good look at it when it came in and again when it was bagged up, as I was aware of John's prior issues with ich in his previous tank.

I'm not trying to sound "defensive"... just concerned for a customer and a fish that I sold :)

Jenn, if I took a good guess, it probably has about 25-35 spots on him. I will keep an eye on him. I'm thinking I may have ich in my system, since it just appeared. If it gets any worse, i'll let you know to find out what is best to do! The lights are off now and have been off for about 2 hours. Should I turn the lights on and feed again? Or will that just cause more stress?
Thanks!

Turned on the lights a minute ago and fed him some brine shrimp soaked in garlic. The first picture is better than the other one. Now that I look at him again...It looks to me like 45-50 spots. The second pic looks like he has nothing on his sides...he does, and they're the type that you can see sticking up.

You haven't posted whether or not he's been eating. Fwiw in my experience if they are eating your 90% there, with or without metro, focus and garlic. If he's not he most likely won't make it.
Hopefully he's getting better, but for future reference you need to aggressively address this before it here bad not the other way around. Waiting for him to get worse before you take action generally results in dead fish. With my first case of ich that what I did and lost the guy. The next time around he wasn't eating what I had so I went out and bought every possible food I could possible feed the guy until he finally accepted one of them, at the end of the day he pulled through with pc mysis.

He is eating! When I fed him brine shrimp last night he ate pretty good! I will feed him again when I get home from school! I like feeding him brine shrimp because he seems to be able to eat it better than the spirulina. I've been leaving the lights off(moonlights too) so he is more relaxed! I think part of the reason he went through a breakout it because the stress of being in a new place and having new fish chase him some. I'm not waiting until it's too late, I acted last night when I saw it! I'm keeping the tank A's stress free A's possible! I just need to go by imagine ocean tomorrow and get some metro and focus!

That's great! With that news I would have no doubts that he'll pull through!

BTW I got to apologize, I was reading through some old threads with one guy in peticular that was procrastinating treatments. Actually I read through three different threads of ICH this morning and somewhat comment on all three through your thread. Sorry! It definitely appears you were on the ball doing every thing you could. What can I say, it's Monday!
