Latest 465 Gallon SPS Reef Pictures

I think you have everyone's dream tank! I would love to see pics of the rest of your system, I bet it's just as impressive.

Thanks. Hardest thing was trying to get the colors to show through in the pics without everything getting washed out by the halides.

SnowManSnow;930499 wrote: seriously I love it!

looking fantastic. What I notice is that there is very little if ANY algae growth.. and that your corals go all the way to the bottom! Great looking tank.

I can't wait to see it in a year's time!
Thanks Snow. I have some bubble algae here and there, but the Desjardinii Tang keeps it at bay. I would almost be pest free in this tank if I could get rid of it. Finally have the nuisance palys, mojanos, and aiptasia under control, maybe eliminated totally (knock wood). Judicious use of the Reef Napalm has helped greatly.

SnowManSnow;930502 wrote: BTW I'm a huge fan of this aquascape.. I've done the same thing on a smaller scale...

letting the corals BE the 'scape is VERY cool

The live rock in the tank is the only biofiltration in the entire system. The sump is empty of everything except equipment.

glxtrix;930501 wrote: I mean....if you think that kind of stuff is cool .......lol, you know I'm just messin...great looking tank man! How are you liking the VHOs? I sure do love how vibrant everything is with just those on!
Hi Lee, the VHOs are great. They bring out fine colors I didn't even realize the corals had with just Radiums. I have to admit they make the colors better than just Radiums alone. I have them come on 1/2 hour before the halides and go off 1/2 hour after. Decent transition between full daylight and no light. The pics were taken with the Radiums and VHOs on.

Thanks Nick.

TChristman;930506 wrote: Looks great. Are those all 40s? Hard to tell but I thought it may be 1 60 and 2 40s on each side? That is a lot of light. Looks awesome.

Thanks Tim. Those are three MP60s on each side of the reef. Lots of flow.

Hehehe......Thanks for the offer Mike. You'll be the first one I call next trip out of town!

High praise coming from you, Reggie. Thanks. I hope to have that frag of Joe's Rainbow grown out in the near future. Thanks again for that.

WannabeeaReefKeeper;930529 wrote: I vote for tank of the decade :D. Dave, your tank is "Showroom Perfection!" I love the 4 metal halides as i have collected two of these reflectors for my future setup.

I also love how you proven to me that it can be done with a bare bottom tank. Oh btw; I am biased towards a Bare Bottom [tank that is]. I have been two a couple of large aquariums and many fish stores and none of them come close to your current setup.

You should start charging admission for future entrance into see your "showroom quality aquarium". I would pay to see it. No need for me to travel that far to personally see it because you have provided some great photos here. Can ARC charge for this link to your tank when others view this link? Your hard work and dedication to getting the setup correct is evident in the photos you posted here. :thewave::thumbs::You_Rock_Emoticon: :You_Rock_Emoticon:

Edit:
Thank you very much for the kind words. I set the tank up bare bottom mainly so I could flow my Vortechs at 100%. I could never do that with a substrate. Been there done that with no sand in the middle because it all got blown to the sides. Too much work putting it back in place daily. I also figured BB was easier to keep clean overall.

As well, the tank bottom is gray PVC on the top and 1/2" glass on the bottom, and the dark PVC makes a BB more tolerable from a looks standpoint, IMO, than glass. I think is has to do with the less reflectivity of the PVC vs glass.

Those fish are lucky...

its tanks like these that remind me why I'm always disappointed when I leave the GA Aquarium...

so how long did you run the Radions before you went to the MH's??? curious if you have anything to report...

Yours is one of the only tanks I force my wife to look at every time you post pics. I absolutely love it

Dave, tank is still looking great! I can't believe that I actually love a tank that is bare-bottom. :)

When you get a moment will you post a current fish list?

Thanks!!!!

Absolutely Stunning!! I love your tank, It's a work of art. Great job!!

got enough mp60's in there dave? im surprised the fish can still swim around with 6 of those things blasting at 100%

Well done Dave. Nice open layout and good sized colonies now.

Let me guess? Then it's off to the local fish place to purchase some wanted items so your tank will look like Dave's "Showroom Tank". If it's o.k. with you, I'd like to borrow this idea just before I make a journey up to Atlanta. I'll make sure that the local fish place will be the 1st stop; since Dave's "Showroom tank" is still vivid to her. :wow2::lol2:

I feel your pain. At least we have pictures "to gawk at". As I stated in a previous post; Dave, I nominate your setup for "Tank of the Decade -- hands down the best one I've seen. And yet, a Bare Bottom aquarium. Who could have imagined obtaining this level while going Bare Bottom?"

This may be a stupid question, but do your animals seem to be OK with all those 60's kicking. Mine hide in the rocks with my little (4-1400's//90gl) PH's running at once?

I ran Radions for about year on my SPS between the 300 gallon DD and the 465 gallon upgrade. I found they didn't give me the SPS color I was looking for. Good for Stylos, Pocis, and Seratioporas, but not acroporas and milleporas.

Hi Stacy,
I think I have 27 fish in this tank. Here is the fish list:

Naso Tang,
Powder Blue Tang,
Unicorn Tang,
Kole Tang,
Desjardinii Tang,
Melanurus Wrasse,
Green Wrasse,
4x Bartlett's Anthias (male and 3 female),
4x Lyretail Anthis (male and 3 females),
2x Sunburst Anthias,
Coral Beauty Angel,
Swallowtail Angel,
Goldflake Angel
Blueline Angel,
Quoy's Parrotfish,
Marine Betta (ORA aquacultured),
Orange Spot Goby,
Banghaii Cardinal
2x Percula Clownfish

I also have some turbo snails.

The fish get around quite well, but the pumps are not at 100% all the time. They follow a programmed cycle that simulates water movement on the reef. I use either EcoSmart Nutrient Transport mode, or Lagoon or Reefcrest mode. The pumps can peak at 100% now with the BB tank. before, I could only peak them at about 60% without blowing the substrate all around.

Thanks Chris......I have already started to thin out some of the colonies.

Thanks again. It is not hard to maintain the tank, just small amounts of regular maintenance. I think the absence of a substrate actually makes it easier to keep a low nutrient environment for the corals.

Tons of activity and swimming with the 60s pumping away. I think a lot of it depends on the fish you buy.
