Hi all!

Has anyone ever used Lugol's Iodine in their tank? If so, what was your experience and what differences could you see?

I think you should start reading up on "your team" before you trash others. Maybe learn the coaches name first. :deal::lightsaber2:

BTW, Those beach pictures are killing me.

We're heading up there for the Bama v Penn State. That's going to be a looooooonng road trip.

Don't use it in your DT, it's toxic as hell. Only thing it should be used for is dips if even that.

So, Lugol's Iodine.........

I was reading where some people would drop one or two drops in their tank to help with the health of corals and to bring more colors out, specially blues.

Why are your reasons for using it? Iodine supplement?

Basically Lugols contains Iodine which is a toxic disinfectant, useless in the aquarium except to kill. What you want is Iodide which is another form of iodine but is what is found in natural seawater. It is also the only form of iodine (iodide) used by corals.
If you look at Seachems or any other product outside of Lugol's (which is it's own complex by the way, not just a brand name) you will see the disclaimer "does not contain Iodine".

I don't think so.

Great. This is the kind of information I was looking for. I'll post the thread and if it gets deleted then so be it.

Thanks bud.

They are talking about very low does of Lugols which is probably ok. If you go Lugol's make sure your testing for Iodine as overdoseing is a serious concern. Keep in mind, as far as I can tell they are using it at a convience. If you use say Seachem Reef Iodide you are getting the exact same intended elements of Lugol's without the more toxic pure Iodine. Either way, with any doseing you should test.

Edit: Here is Seachem's product explanation

I think the dosing of Lugool's is usually cautioned for all except "experts", whatever experience level that entails, because of the possibility of overdose like Dawgface said. Iodine is more unstable than iodide. Iodide is supposed to be the safest form for dosing in an aquarium.

Here is a short article that doesn't get too technical on the subject. Iodidne comes in many products we already use in our reefs, so the question of whether it needs to be dosed separately can be difficult to answer.

I use Lugol's as a Dip however, 40 drops per gallon for 10-14 minutes (I do 12). I have not found any negative issues r/t its use so far. It actually works great on LPS. I dip in Lugols and do a revive cleaning when placing LPS in my tank. A lot of times, if you see an issue in LPS, like loss of tissue, if you do a Lugol's dip it stops it. Jorge's son Matt at PureReef turned me onto it when I started adding LPS like Wellsos, Trachys, Elegance, and Euphyllias to my reef tanks.

BITE YOUR TONGUE!!!!!

I concur with those who suggest TESTING! Most tanks that receive regular water changes with a decent salt mix, do not need supplemental dosing of iodine or iodide of any kind. In fact I've tested water for people who have been told they "need" iodine/iodide and sold a bottle of product without even the benefit of a test. In a couple of instances, the iodine tested out in near lethal quantities. Some is good - more is not better, and can in fact, be harmful.

I've used Lugol's in the past, in a heavily loaded soft coral tank. One drop in a 37g + sump. No issues - but again, this wasn't my first rodeo. There are more user-friendly (read: idiot-proof) products out there, but I will again stress that if you're dosing for it, you MUST test for it and be positive you need it - especially for iodine/iodide. Most water that I've tested at customers' request, don't need supplemental iodine/iodide.

GO YELLOWJACKETS!!!!!!!!

I dose Lugols, but VERY little every other day. Maybe a drop per 100+g's. My cleaner shrimp and harlequin are pretty happy.

+10000000000

By the way, I put in 3 drops of Lugol's once a week in my 66 gal. Nothing bad has ever happened.

Even if you don't and haven't had problems yet I would bet against the house you won't. I can't figure out for the life of me why that was ever prescribed for iodide supplementation.

Actually Jorge from Pure Reef told me to do it.. He does it in all his tanks once a week. Swears by it.
