Please help me choose a new skimmer. I am thinking to help with my nitrate issue a bigger skimmer will help. I currently have a coralife ss65 for my system that is currently 120g total. The coralife sits in the sump. I need a skimmer that i can put underneith my tank but not in the sump. I am getting rid of my current fuge to make room for the new skimmer so height of the skimmer wont be a prob. So i need to plumb water out of my sump into the skimmer then back into the sump. Also if there is a skimmer that has some type of bubble diffuser and maybe a pump included. Thanks for your help. My budegt is around $400. Also I will be upgrading my tank in the future to about 240g total so i need a skimmer that will be able to skim around 240g.

also are the skimmers that sit outside the sump, considered beckett style ?

The beckett doesn't have to do with where it sits in regards to the sump, but in how the air is injected into the skimmer. I've had 3 different types of skimmers:
Berlin
Needlewheel
Beckett

I'm currently running a Precision Marine Bullet 2 (beckett style) and the other 2 were like toys compared to the beckett. You will need a good size pump to go with it, but a MR2 or Bullet 2 would do you just fine.

The downside to this type of skimmer is that it is loud, and requires much more power over a needlewheel skimmer. Some say that it requires much more tinkering, but mine has been much more stable then my previous skimmers.

yeah i will need a skimmer that is quite, cause the tank sits next to my couch in the living room. Is an MRC-2 quite ?

You could do a recirculating Octopus needle wheel skimmer--I've heard nothing but rave reviews and for $400, you might be able to pick one up that could handle a 240 (I would look used first for a bigger model) Check with Sam at Aquabuys.com for local availability.

Have you looked at the Aqua Medic Turboflotor T1000 Multi? You can hang it off the side of the sump. It would be alittle on the lite side for a 250 but its suppose to be rated up that high for lite bioload.

not really looking for something that hangs on the sump, jizzezm ill check aquabuys for the octopus skimmer thanks

Here ya go......

Heres a link the the Octopus thread at RC which has a loooong thread about them.

You will probably have to go used to get a skimmer big enough for a 240g at $400. New you could go with a DAS EX-2 which could do a 240g, but wouldn't handle a heavily stocked one.

Orca would be another vote, but I would want a slighty larger one:

Another option in your price range is the AquaEuro 400 Classic. Great price, can handle the load but the pujmps suck and are currently under recall so finding one is a pain. The pumps can be replaced cheaply and aren't a problem if you run external [IMG]http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1070192&perpage=25&pagenumber=1">http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1070192&perpage=25&pagenumber=1</a>

Octopus Dual Recirc 250 would work welll but a bit out of your budget

Those are my cheap picks. Turbofloter 5000 Shorty or a My Reef Creations MR3 is a good choice as well.

Octopus or the Orca(good thinking Cameron)Im actually thinking about buying one from them also,But I would stay far away from the AquaEuro skimmers.

I run the AE265 and it is the best skimmer I have tried to date (price-wise anyway). I will probably chuck the pumps down the road at some point, but a couple GenX 2400s will fit perfectly. The AE pumps are cloned GenX pumps so for the price you can buy the skimmer, chuck the pumps, buy new GenX ones and still be under $400. It is more work than buying an Orca, but a triple or even double recirc Orca is much more than the $400 or so for the classic and new pumps (which you don't really need if you run external).

Ultimately the DAS I think is the best of the lot of them. Clone AquaBee pumps and a clone Deltec skimmer. They are very good skimmers, but people have a lot of problems ordering them.

i think that this would be a good deal , but am not sure about the loudness and i have heard that you have to tinker with the MRC skimmers?

The MR2 is right on the verge of being to small for a 240g. If you go MRC, I wouldn't go less than an MR3 on that size system.
