new to hobby questions

Oh no doubt. That was just something that was never told to me. I got a 5 gallon i can start doing day before mixes in. It makes sense

On the lighting there is no real answer. It all depends on what types of coral you want to keep. Im an L.E.D man myself there more costly but my tank is only small 55 gallon and 4 foot in length and i only want soft corals (mushrooms, zoa's duncans) so i can get away with a medium light levels if i wanted something a bit more adventurous like with some Montipora type corals i would need a couple more or too upgrade Halide's

I think all of us on here would agree besides pure atomic use t8 stink. Less maby u wanna do a fish only or mushroom tank. T-5 would be the next step up depending on what corals u want it could get expensive for a 6+ bulb fixture even used. Mh light will cover u growing anything and with a good 20k bulb like radium u won't need attinic for that pop n color also if u don't over do it to the point u need a chiller it will cut down on heating costs. Led can also be good but there are a ton of scam led lights out there that are not bright. Althogh there are some powerful bulbs out there like 3 watt Cree that put out lots of light. But n that brand I think there still at 6500k n blue n most fixtures that's just horrible color IMO for any deep tanks. But a 40g no that deep not to mention they use less electricity n put out little heat. So u will be using your heater more often there

If sixties only u can get away with power compacts but this will limit your options fir the future

sweet, thanks guys. i think i will stick with what i have for now, maybe bust out the halide one in a month or 6 when i get more adventurous and can start adding corals - see how it goes

good news on pwc front, the nitrates are between 0 and 5, the phosphate is now between 0 and 0.25 ( but more yellow) and the kH is up to 125.3

still need to work on that calcium.

:) you guys are invaluable :)

Some 1 was selling a 150 watt clamp on mh for lik 65$ or so on here the other day. Not sure if I'm alowed to say that or not on here. It's kinnda technical on here sometimes.

me too, been doing it that way 7 years now, as long as the temp is close

and thank you RaisedOnNintendo :) for the light heads up and for the corals offer

i can do a welcome frag pack as well for you, ive got some mushrooms that are growing like crazy in my fuge and frag tank you are sure welcome to, blue and pinstriped, theyre actually really cool but they piss off my sps so free to u!

thanks so much! that's really generous :)

give me a month or 2 to get things settled and we're on :)

hey i have a silly question about live rock.
DOes it need to be quarantined? i would like to put in a few more pieces in a few weeks, but do i have to go thru the whole process of QT for rocks?
thanks guys :D

depends if its already cured wherever youre getting it from.....if not youll need to cure it....or else your have die off and re cycle the tank....if its well cured then you can put it right in...might wanna stick it in some fresh RO water to drive out any unwanted hitchhikers

Yes very important don't use live rock. U can get bad hitch hikers on it. Dry it out a few days soak it in bleach, rinse it off with fresh water. Then add to your tank slowly. That way no bugs.

what i normally do is instead of bleach because it can be dangerous if not washed out completly... i used hot hot water that way you can rinse away bad hitch hickers but not worry about does it still have bleach on it?? ive got a tank set up in my room that i need to break downa nd they are cheap corals... and wouldnt be able to sell anyways... i live in smyrna right now near cumberland mall if you want to stop by some time to pick some thing up i can help you get some of this stuff out so im not just killing them off... but its nothing special... some green star polyps, button polyps, and kenya trees... all softies and from what im reading it seems like your lights will work fine on it =] just send me a pm if you want some thing and we can see what i can do and of corse free =]
