Nick's 180 Gallon Build Thread

Thank you Rich! Need some help with stocking the fish, this is the biggest tank I have ever had so hopefully less restrictions on what I can get. Want to do reef safe fish, keep the suggestions coming!

Here are some pics of my custom light mount. Used 80/20 and modified the ocean revive housing.

Bad News - Had a velvet outbreak that Ive been dealing with for a couple weeks now. Lost 4 fish so far including 2 out of my 3 tangs. Surprisingly my six line wrasse and my yellow tang seem to be fine but too early to tell if they are going to make it through the outbreak. Working on a serious QT setup right now. Learned my lesson on that one...

On a positive note- my corals are doing great, getting some good growth out of my sps with the ocean revives. Thinking about adding a few t5s to the setup soon. Stay tuned!

Updates -

Finally making some progress on the parasite that invaded my tank. Not sure if it was velvet or just a bad ich outbreak. Added a 40w emperor aquatics uv. Have seen a noticeable difference in water clarity. My yellow tang and sixline have never looked happier. Going to wait about 4-6 more weeks to add any new fish. Finishing up my QT tank this weekend (will post pics)

Switched from Red Sea coral pro to Red Sea (blue bucket). I was having problems with my Alk being too high (around 13-15) and since I switched it is much more manageable at 10.5 (slowly going down).

Also pulled the trigger on an 60" Ati 4 bulb fixture that is currently being shipped. Excited to see how this will compliment my leds and how my corals respond. Will upload some pics after I get it setup.

Finally got the t5s installed to compliment my ocean revives and wow they are bright. These ati fixtures are no joke. Also got my qt setup and added a pair of maroon clowns. Redid my scape a little bit to get rid of some dead spots. Posted a vid here- <!-- gcu-updated ame -->http://youtu.be/VYbMgIxx1Lc<!-- gcu-updated /ame -->

The 180 is progressing nicely, had a few algae blooms but everything seems to be settling in. Currently working on adding a 80g rimless into the build. Have the tank, working on the stand now, also have a jump start on the plumbing. This will be plumbed directly into the current system. I received the tank for a steal so I had to jump on it, always wanted a rimless. Not sure if I am going to set it up as a frag tank or try to do a specialty tank. Still toying with a few ideas.

Automated my 2 part dosing with a couple BRS dosing pumps hooked up to the apex. Also switched salts over the past month to RC. No point in paying out the ... for salt when I am monitoring most of my levels closely. I am also taking a new approach to water changes after speaking with a few experienced (10+ years) reefers. Going from 10% per week to about 20-25% every two weeks. I have already seen more polyp extension and more stability while testing this out.

Sump has been invaded with pods:up:

Have also added a few new fish and corals -
melanurus wrasse
yellow watchman paired with pistol shrimp
2 maroon clowns
tailspot blenny (may have been eaten, haven't seen him in 2 weeks)

All the fish, aside from the missing blenny are doing well. The UV has seemed to knock out whatever infection or parasite invaded my tank about 14 weeks ago. Will post some new pics soon

Thanks Russ!

This was my first big wood working project and it wasn't too bad. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate it about a 5. Hardest part was skinning and doing the trim. I had to cut all the plywood with a circular saw which was tough. Would've have been much easier with a table saw. But for the $ that you save and quality you get from building it yourself it was worth it.

Tank is finally maturing nicely! It's been a couple months since I posted an update. I have tweaked my filtration a bit, upgraded my filter sock setup to run 7in socks, seems to have really helped with water clarity. Seeing lots of good growth from all of my corals. Still doing bimonthly water changes with reef crystals. Going to be adding a lot more livestock in the fall. Check it out

Thanks fellas, I like having the extra space. Can't wait to start really stocking this tank. I have been taking it pretty slow to get everything stable before I dump a bunch of money into additional livestock.

I need to also invest in a better camera, these pictures really don't do the tank justice. Iphone 6plus camera isnt up to par for these.

She's a boxer, Jeff. We do get the bulldog question a lot though

Thanks Jeff! Maybe we can swap some corals sometime and you can meet her.
