Qt

Gotcha.

I would say that's an extreme misconception in its relation to why we as hobbyists QT before DT tank entry. Liveaquaria's quarantine is merely for the quick visual health and feeding of the fish as far as in aware. These fish are still very much susceptible to disease and illness from other fish in thier systems. QT everything is highly recommended.

I QT almost everything. The only fish that I didn't QT was my red mandarin but they really need pods to eat so he went straight into my DT.

LiveAquaria has ZERO QT.

Divers Den has an extensive QT.

I would say the things going through Divers Den are quarantined as well as the majority of people using quarantine tanks. You should read Mockery's link. They also have a nice video on their site.

Other than Sea Atlanta does anyone know of any local stores that have a full quarantine process?

Edit:

Correct.

Interesting! Did not know that.

Remember that QT is also intended to allow your new arrivals to recover from their journey to your home. Wether it's a 20 minute drive in a bag or an over night package. They are afforded an opportunity to regain their composure without added stress of the established inhabitants of your tank that compete for food and dominance.

Totally agree...in fact on delicate species most likely the most important reason. To help the fish adapt to a captive diet.

Here's a good reason for QT, I picked up some live rock from an established tank, (guy was moving across country and didn't want to move rock) Placed the rock in my curing tub when I got home and cranked up the 400W lights.
On the hidden side of his rock was MAJANO's and Aptasia. I've already lived this nightmare in my DT. I will kill these off with peppermint shrimp and aptasiaX well before they go into my DT's. QT's give you ample time to identify undesirables and deal with them before you risk damaging prize pieces in your DT.

Man. I wouldn't even wanna risk it. I'd write the "live" rock off and nuke it before putting in my tank. But, it sounds like you've handled it before.

Yea, I have plenty of time to let it sit and starve off or target what I don't want on it.
If I was in a hurry it would already be in bleach water. :)

I would let it sit and become dead rock and reintroduce it. That is why I went with all dry rock with the new tank and let it build bacteria for a few months. I am still fighting majano in a tank that was set up 5 years ago from it being introduced through live rock.

I checked "always QT" as it is mostly what I do. But, I have purchased fish from Divers Den and I will actually place them directly in the DT. I turn off all the lights and wrap the tank so that it is pitch black for 24 hours too to prevent initial aggression. I have had no issues with DD fish either. I called and spoke with one of the caretakers because I had some specific questions that the 800 number people could not answer. They took my number down and called me back within hours..........A+ on service for sure. They prophylactically copper all fish and treat all clowns for brooklynella too. So, you cannot find a better place to order fish from.

I got 4 fish 3 weeks ago and they all came extremely well packed and as shown. A juvi Chrysurus angel, a fine lined tang, a red head solon fairy wrasse and a neon goby. All are jamming. I was worried about the angel as it is significantly smaller than my adult emperor, but she has only made a couple half hearted chases and that was at feeding time..........but she has also done that to all the other fish as well. The tank wrapping really made I difference I think. I observed the initial greetings the next day and they were much more subdued over what would have happened had I not darkened the tank.

As stated by dawgface......Live Aquaria is totally different and those fish all DEMAND qt to prevent issues.

I chose always and never. I generally never qt a fish, but I watch most of the fish that I purchase for a while before purchasing, or I am gettin it from a friend that has had it for a while. I've had issues in the past and realize I should properly qt, but sometimes I just have to gamble.

As far as corals go... That's a different story. I've had red bugs before and dont want them again. As far as I am concerned, every one in this reef club has red bugs. With that mind set, any new sps will go through a 12hr interceptor dip in a 4gallon qt tank before it goes to the DT. I have a Hawkins and a plum crazy going through the treatment right now.

This option isn't there, but... I always QT except in the rare occasion that a fish comes from a friend whose tank I know well. If nothing new has been introduced into his/her tank, and no issues... then the QT has effectively been done.
