Walking into this hobby with no experience and absolutely zero knowledge of how reef tanks work was quite daunting. Along the way, I asked about a million (give or take a few) stupid questions that I always felt annoying for bothering people with. As it is, reefers are a patient bunch and I soon enough began to get a feel for what was going on thanks to them.

It hasn't been easy though; the first four months of the tanks life I was out of town and my girlfriend had to tend to the tank, but she did an amazing job. Algae blooms came and went, but we have never lost a fish and only a few corals (sps, one wellso) and one (sabae) nem. Looking back now, I'm really glad I invested right away in a RO/DI unit--the entire setup came from my dentist (Dr. Sheen) for those in Augusta, but did not have a RO/DI. Along the way I've upgraded pretty much everything.

Augusta is a hard place to be in the hobby; there aren't many of us and Star Aquatics just left town and took Matt Medina, who has been the most help to me. Also, Dr. Sheen, Reggie, Tiana, Elizabeth, Carlos, and a few other people have helped me, sold me frags, and told me to slow down over and over, haha.

Anyway, the setup

Well, ermmm...dad has to use whatever leverage he can to get mom to let him open his money clip to this hobby. It started as a FOWLR tank but that idea quickly became boring and the compact lights on the JBJ 28 nano were horrid looking, so I upgraded to a MH Sunpod and here we are, haha.

i like that! blame the baby :) and the cool thing is she can't prove you wrong OR get away! nice
btw i have tank envy. i love seeing what i COULD do one of these days

Great looking tanks! My little one said the same thing to me...we have a tank in her room too...Hard to say no to the little ones, lol.

Wow Ryan the tank looks awesome!!!!! :) im impressed! everything looks so good and happy! ever figure out what caused "issues" in the begining?

oh the baby is cute too :P I hope to see you and the family around town soon!

The biggest issues were caused by nitrates due to my faulty baffling/lack of top off system in my sump. The water level in the area the skimmer sat in changed with the water level overall; so at times it didn't skim at all and others it would overflow when I (like a bonehead) topped off and didnt turn the skimmer down.

Anyway, redesigned the sump, got a new skimmer, and added a ATO system that I only need to make water for about every week.:yay:

Also, check out that mystery coral I bought from star at night....

great pics! nice tank! you can just go online and get what you need...........pm me if you want.

That's a great setup, especially for only 7 months old! It looks like you've done your homework, and I'm glad you've had such a great experience with the other reefers. Too often new people will come a long and take any negative criticism as being attacked, but this is how we learn. I predict much success from this system. Thanks for sharing!

hey Ryan, great looking setups!i need to get to your place and check them out.the frags are looking great.maybe put the new acan in the shade a little, its used to my t5s.beautiful baby too!ill give you a call this weekend.
Reggie

looking like a great start! going to look better and better as things start to grow in !!!!

BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s. when you frag that "awesome acan" I'll be at your door! That thing is beautiful.:jumpy:
