Sad day for me.

No flow or oxygen for several hours can wipe them out too - and the larger fish need more oxygen than the smaller ones (or corals/inverts)... that might explain why all the bigger fish died and the little ones survived... and why the corals are fine.

I do have back up battery for my 2 mp40. Even the power went out. I still have enough flow in my tank. I think. This is my first saltwater tank been up running about 8 month ago. Still wondering what cause of death.

New to the hobby, so wont pretend I know much about what could have happened. But from a purely analytical point of view. The one thing he mentions that happened differently was adding the PBT. Whatever was introduced, happened then, whether on his hands or from the fish itself.

If the newest fish was sick, yes it could have transmitted a pathogen, but usually one would see symptoms before sudden death, especially that many, in that short of time. I suppose it's *possible*, but not very probable for them to all drop dead without symptoms.

OP - have you tested the battery backups? I know of somebody who had battery backups on Vortechs fail, with devastating results - and he had several.

If you had any loss of power yesterday, then that remains a possibility - I wasn't clear if you did or didn't.

If there was no loss of power and/or you know for a fact that the battery backups did their job, then it comes back to some sort of toxin, IMO.

I only see 6 fish, what other 3 died. Also, I also believe that it has something to do with airborne chemicals.

Im thinking it was the PBT as well. I added one not long ago and he was mean as heck, stressed everyone out and the fish got ich. I didnt even notice it as my daylights arent on when I get home and Ive been busy lately. My neighbor actually pointed it out to me. 2 days later the PBT and 3 other fish were gone. Did you test for ammonia?

Did you QT the PBT? I would bet the pbt brought something in which killed him and the others.

It's part of this hobby. Don't beat yourself up too much. Are u restocking ? Or taking a break?

Don't blame luck; she wasn't even around. Last I heard she was surfing in Hawaii :lol2:

Seriously, though, was the PBT treated and quarantined?

I still do have 34g solana cube. But I'm looking for 180g to replace my 125g. I won't leave this hobby that easy. Just starting it and I'm addicted to reef keeping.. Lol

I don't think you should beat yourself up but I think that you might want to rethink upgrading to a larger tank . You just lost 8 fish and you don't know why. How will you prevent that again since you don't know the cause. Not a responsible action IMO. If my comment stings a little so be it but it is each of our responsibility to care for the animals we choose to possess and marking this off to luck and keeping trying until your luck changes is not being responsible. Killing 8 fish with no clue as to why is not part of the hobby.

I was thinking to update my tank two month ago. Now almost all of my fish is gone. I think now is the good time to getting update. More easy to transfer it over the new tank. The only reason I wanna to update it.I dont like my tank. because my 125g tank is not RR And scratch all over. I just don't want to restock it. And it's hard to update later on. nobody want to kill fish in this hobby. But thing happen. I think alot of people in this forum got the same situation like me. Fish death. But no idea what happen. But I believe in myself I will found out the cause of death all my fish.

No, random, unexplained mass death doesn't just happen. There's always a cause. Some people want to know and take measures to ensure it doesn't happen again, others deceive themselves into thinking it's just "luck", blatantly avoiding pinpointing the cause as it'll only reveal something one doesn't want to admit and accept.

either way, the solution for pollution is dilution so whatever the cause it would be less of a chance of happening again in a larger tank.

good luck

As is usually the case, there are at least two sides to every story. While finding a cause should be a very high priority, IMHO upsizing now is not a completely bad idea. I would suspect that after this episode, Kenlude will be extreamly cautions with either restocking or an upgrade. Either way, slow and steady would be the way I approach it. If upgrading, get the tank up and running with very little livestock. As in one fish. Keep it that way for a several months and watch everything like a hawk. Again, JMHO.
