My skimmer sucks. Could any one give me some advice on a good cheap skimmer and where to get it from? My current skimmer is a jebo i got for $30 and it sucks. But you get what you pay for i guess. Thanks

I would recommend the Coralife Super Skimmer. I have one but I don't like it because it is somewhat hard to adjust but it is cheap and skims really well.

It's hard to mind a mixture between good and cheap when it comes to skimmers. The best thing you can probably do is find a used Aqua C Remora to buy. Is this for your 29g tank?

good and cheap rarely come together when it comes to a skimmer. there are some reasonably priced ones no matter what size tank you have.

Cora-life skimmers have a pretty good rep and are not too out of reach, they make em from 65 gal tanks up to 220. I have two of the 220' and they are nice, somewhere around $180 online

turbo-floater skimmers have some rated up to five hundred gals. they range up to the Euro-reef custom skimmers, I have one on my reef, they are VERY pricey but worth it.

I would highly suggest Andy @ My Reef Creations they make first class products and are an ARC sponsor

The pumps being the Heart of a tank: I think you have to look at the Skimmer as the liver or kidney's ~ an investment in a quality skimmer makes all the difference

I would suggest looking into the Octupus Skimmer line. Most people have been happy with the skimmer and my personal experience has been positive as well. I would try the http://www.marinesolutionsinc.com/catalog/Protein-Skimmers-Octopus-Skimmers/c22_35/p46/Octopus-Needlewheel-110/product_info.html">http://www.marinesolutionsinc.com/catalog/Protein-Skimmers-Octopus-Skimmers/c22_35/p46/Octopus-Needlewheel-110/product_info.html</a>

EuroReef skimmers while not "the best" are certainly considered the best by most peoples budgets. Deltec and the like are just too pricey for most. TurboFloters depending on who you ask are a good skimmer and fairly proven. They use a recirc design which I like. ASM and Octopus skimmers are EuroReef knock offs I believe and actually perform pretty close to the EuroReef. For my money counting bang for the buck:

Octopus
ASM
Euroreef
TurboFloter

yeah I wouldnt even rate the coralife one up there, its a great skimmer but wayyyy to finicky, and it'll over flow on ya if youre carefull. I'ld say an Aqua C Remora or the octopus, those are both great skimmers and cost a lil less than most yet youre not sacrificing quality.

Yes, actually Euro-reefs are really considered on a different level than cora-life and turbo-floators

Whew I'm glad i'm not the only one that thinks the Coralife's are finicky. One week they work then the next they are out of wack?

there are mods that you can put on them, I actually had a thread on that somewhere. Still have mine actually, it was a great skimmer jsut had some design flaws.

I have several people tell me they work great for a while and then flip out and never work right again. No idea how true it is though. I do know that for needlewheel skimmers it is mostly about the pump. You can optimize here and there on a skimmer, but the pump is key to a great skim.

yup. And it has a lot to do with water level in the tank as well, needlewheel skimmers are all about correct and constant water level.

Also i have had mixed reports on whether i need a skimmer on a 29 gallon or not. what do ya'll think?

I really think you get what you pay for. So like everyone has said look through the couch's and pick up every penny you see. Speaking from experince I would never buy a cheap skimmer again.

You don't need a skimmer if you want to do a lot of water changes. IMO a skimmer makes a world of difference! I had a ten gallon and twenty gallon for two years with no skimmers but I did ALOT of water changes. If it is heavily stocked than I would get one but then again I would get one anyways.
