I am considering joining the ARC, and I read that full time students only have to pay $20 a year. How do I prove that I am a full time student so I can join with this discount? Thanks!

Hi CiCi!

<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 12px;"><span style="color: navy;"><span style="color: navy;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Here is the definition for student membership eligibility taken from Article III: Membership of our By-Laws located at http://www.atlantareefclub.org/index.php?page=bylaws">http://www.atlantareefclub.org/index.php?page=bylaws</span></a> : </span></span></span></span>

Applicants under fourteen (14) years of age cannot apply for membership unless a parent or guardian joins. Student members, regardless of charter membership affiliations, may not hold office or vote.”</span></span></span></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 12px;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"></span></span></span></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 12px;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">BTW, our meetings are always free and non-members are always welcome.</span></span></span></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 12px;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">To join, you'll either need to pay via PayPal and send your payment to Treasurer@AtlantaReefClub.org</span> or come to one of our meetings and join there. I think membership is $20/yr for a student membership.</span></span></span></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 12px;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">I hope you join the ARC or at least hang out on this forum and learn.</span></span></span></span></span>

Bob is correct. If you are in Highschool or under the age of 18, you can have a student membership. Otherwise, all college age students are full fee.

Because you are the only student that I really know, and I don't like you... That is why!!!

;)

It keeps you from spending that $10 on beer!!!

Because the rules were made long before I was here!!!!

hahah thats the funiest sh$t i heard all week, anyone who can afford a reef tank can afford an extra $10. WOW - some people , "shaking head laughing":lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:
If youd rather eat then, hurry now and sell off your fish and corals because it costs $$ to maintain them. We dont want you to starve and die!

I agree college students should be offered a discount.

In addition, I also think those in the military active duty should be offered a discount.

Maybe a good topic for the BoD to review.

But Dawgdude, I think if you care about the issue, you'll need to actually present something.

I completely agree, but after BOD approval it has to go before the membership since it is a change in the Bylaws/Constitution.

Make sure you cover all "college student" scenarios. Does that cover someone in:

- 4 year full time undergrad?
- part time?
- online degree?
- late-life degree?
- grad students?
- "career students"?
- if I sign up for a class once a year, do I qualify?
- if I take CE classes, do I qualify?

There was a lot of problems with figuring out who qualified when this was in place, so it was dropped back to high school. It was reasoned by the BoD that if you can afford a reef tank, then the extra $10/yr wasn't going to be too much to bear. That's... what.. 2 drinks per year?

I think if you have a college id card, you should qualify. I'm not going to spend $60 on a class to get a $10 discount.

And not everyone would pursue it either. Personally, if I was taking a class I would still pay the $30.

Regarding the hobby costs...my 24g was very cheap to run. My pico costs almost nothing now that it's setup. The hobby is moving forward toward being more affordable for the entry level person.

here you go.

I see a key statement in there that student members should be aware of. They cannot vote or hold office.

Well, didn't mean to start a debate over it :) I'm thinking about joining either way... I spend so much money on my fish I'm sure I will get that money back using the discounts. So what kind of meetings and events are held that I can attend being a member? Just wondering...

Dawg, you file a motion to me and have to be at the BoD meeting to pitch your complaint.

You can attend any meeting without being a member except the BBQ and the Holiday party. Upcoming meetings are: Social night (May), Aquarium photography (June), The rest we are still working on.

What about low income membership? College students arent the only ones who dont have expendable income. We're swatting at a big hornet's nest!

You mean like Seniors and Disabled? I'd be up for that too.

Otherwise, they can pound sand. Sorry if I offended anyone. I personally don't like going to work but I still do it.
