OK, after some research I decided against getting a clown tang but I'm still not sure about a Achilles. Please help me with input as to some beautiful large tangs to add to my shark/tang tank. I'm wanting get a couple more and I realy like the Achilles, Tennenti, and Thompson. Any ideas?

I want a clown tang too... some have had some good experiences others... not so much. The owner of Bio Reef down in Jacksonville basically equated it as a "Poor Mans Sohal"... and just as mean.

Last fish you should add to the tank period.

Yeah, after doing my research, I determined no way with the clown. I'm designing a shark tank and realize that's still not enough room for a clown tang.

Never kept a clown tang, but have kept 2 Achilles long term (one currently). Not sure what feedback you're looking for, but in general they are a more difficult tang to keep. Ick magnet, sometimes finicky with food and probably one of the most dominant tangs outside of a sohal. One of the last tangs to add to your tank if you are doing multiple species.

Two key factors in their success is highly oxygenated water and you have to select a very healthy specimen from the start (fat - no sunken belly, thin flesh, etc.). They aren't fish you can expect to introduce and "build up" - you have to start with them in top condition.

BTW - if you feel you don't have room for a clown tang, you wouldn't have room for an Achilles.

Well cool, you just crushed my dream! hahaha, just joking. I'm not sure I understand about the having enough room reference...the clown is just nuts in a tank. You really feel the same about an Achilles?

I've not heard that the two were comparable in temperment before. I know Achilles are supposed to be hard to keep, but in a 150-180 gallon tank you should be fine (I'm assuming the tank would be at least this big due to the number of tangs you're wanting).

I'm looking at a 450ish or a pond with-in two years. I have a red-sea sailfin and a hippo in my reef tank presently. I was thinking about introducing my 2-3 other tangs into my baby shark tank for the next year or so and then joining them all into the next stage tank. I can design around a difficult tang, that's awesome but I don't want to waste my effort on a lost cause.

Achilles and clowns are very similar in size, so that was my only reference to your comment on not enough room. Achilles are pretty active … I wouldn’t say crazy/nuts active though. Mine probably covers my tank twice in the time it takes my Desjardini to go one length of the tank. I didn’t know clown tangs to be that way, but like I said I never personally kept one. I just knew clown tangs to be very finicky eaters. The dozen or so clowns I’ve seen in tanks didn’t seem to move anymore than most other tangs I’ve seen. Sohal, Achilles and Powder Blues were the ones I’ve known to be very active.

Don’t want to down the Achilles, they are an awesome fish and once established do really well. It just takes some time to get their diet expanded. Definitely not a lost cause at all.

I have a thompson tang and they have such a great personality. The only thing is that's the fish you probobly need to add first. In my experience they have been the most shy. I havn't tried the other two tangs but I plan on adding the achilles eventually. That will be the last fish added to my tank.

I have one with 8 other tangs model citizen. Probably the most personable of the tangs in my tank if that is possible from a fish.:)
